Well, in my pursuit of less buffeting, went and got an MRA Vario. Does seem much smoother airflow, but I haven't had an opportunity to test on any 'unrestricted' roads yet! The visor / wing thing doesn't seem to make much difference - under 60mph anyway - whatever position it's in. What effect does it have at higher speeds?

I tried several different setting with mine and finally settled on getting the wing as high up and far away from the main screen as possible. As noted elsewhere on this site, buffeting will likely not be eliminated based on your upper torso length, crosswinds, helmet style, ear plugs, astrological sign and other variables. That being said, using the vario screen has caused me to stop looking for other solutions.
Cheers,
Brian

I set mine on a shelf in my garage after a couple hundred miles. The shorty screen I made by cutting down a Triumph touring screen (cut real short, like the sport screen) provides a way, way smoother airflow, and more protection than no screen. I didn't want to go with a barn door type screen, and after running Aeroflow & Laminar Lip products on several bikes, I expected the Vario design to work. It really doesn't seem to do much of anything for me in any of it's positions, although I will say it's quieter with the flap all the way up, than all the way down. In between? Eh . . . I even tried all three seat heights, which makes a difference with the short screen, but not with the Vario. For me, with the Vario mounted, smooth air can be found - tucked way down, or with my butt about 10 inches off the seat. :-) Thing is, you never know till you try it if it's gonna work for you. Several folks on this forum swear by them. YMMV, as they say. The most enthusiastic recommendation I've gotten so far, is from a Tiger ridin' Triumph mechanic who runs the Triumph sport screen, plus one of those JC Whitney-lookin handlebar mounted universal shields. Swears to God it's smooth and quiet behind the pair. Looks kinda goofy . . . . but then many say the Vario does too. Fickle bunch, we motorcyclists.

Just take it on a road where you can stretch the bikes legs a bit and experiment with the settings. I found there was less turbulence for me 'one notch in' from fully extended. It doesn't really come into it's own until i get to about 55 mph and above, after that it gives me better weather protection and less buffetting than anything else i have tried.
But this subject is a bit like tyres, oil, colours etc....lots of opinions, but you must go with what works FOR YOU

I found it works well below 65 for me, and oddly enough works a tad better when I have a topcase mounted. But I'm a candyarse when it comes to buffeting. Nossir, I don't like it! Much prefer a 100mph full on blast of unfettered air . . . . . sigh . . . . wish I was in one right now as a matter of fact.

I have a vario, and find it better than standard, but then almost anything, or, alternatively, nothing would be.
Big improvement was fitting lower bars, they work much better with the screen and 100+ with no buffetting is fine for me, though its still noisy despite a Schuberth S1 and custom made earplugs.
Its all just a shedload of excuses for going out for another good blast to see if today's changes make any difference.

MRA Vario on my bike is an improvement but not equal to the price I paid for it, what with exchange and all that!
I think it could be improved on yet but you asked about settings!
I have best results on the highest setting, just leave it there all the time.
The reason it is such an individual thing is not personal height but where your bum is in relation to the rest of your body, IE: Short/long legs or short/long back.
I have shorter legs long back and long arms!
My stage/film name was "Cheetah"! :-D Cheers John.

My personal best setting is second notch from bottom. Just goes to show that it'd highly individual.
