Just fitted a set of R&G crash bungs. Both the mounting posts are the same length. However the left side (clutch Leaver) side sticks out much more than the other side.

Does everyones or should I have one mounting post longer than the other???

I noticed this after an engineer mate made up a set for me fpr my 06. We only measured one side - doh!

We are going to have another go and make the stems to suit each side. Our design actually threads onto the mounting bolt, rather than replacing it with a longer version, so that the bending forces are taken by the stem.

the plan was originally to use stainless steel stems with turned alloy 'mushrooms'. these looked great but would need to be turned/refaced after every drop. Being new to crash bungs, I'm beginning to realise that the heads need to wear away (sacrificial) and a bit of 'give' in the design is a good idea. There appears to be a difference in views on the stems though, some say they should break off, others not.

Latest plan is to use a mild steel stem, powder coated, with the proper 'bung' made of nylon or whatever. I'm more interested in protecting a stationary/walking pace drop than a big get-off at speed. In fact I don't want to plan for the latter!

When I dropped my 2 day old 06, it laid on it's RH pannier and bar end. There was a tiny scratch on the fork leg and I replaced the hand gaurd but the pannier saved it! Triumph touch-up paint for pannier lids sorted the rest.

if you are making your own crash bugs, the best thing to use as the mushrooms are skateboard wheels they are perfect for the job.

Thanks for that idea Marauder!

My mate alreay has some suitable material (I think it's called polypink) which is going to be turned down to suit the fixings etc. Otyherwise, I'd be off to mug a local skaterboy...

The main differences with the home-made ones is that they can be made to suit the off-set and the stalks will be independant of the engine mounting bolts, to ease replacement. I will still have to turn the bolts around so that a portion of thread appears on the outside (will use custom length stainless bolts for this).

As long as the stems are engineered to bend first, the forces on the enfine mountings will be minimised - hopefully!

Jon

Finally fittd the (modified) home-made stems and bungs. They look absolutely spiffing and are EVEN with the bobbins protruding exactly the same amount from the tank. To do this, we had to make the left and right stems different lengths.

I met another 06 owner who had fitted the R&G bungs and he explained to me that the stems themselves acted as the nuts for the engine mounting bolts. The bungs we made do not mount by this method - A stainless steel M12 mounting bolt is used, facing outwards, then a nut is torqued on in the usual fashion except for being on the outside. The bolts were made with about 30mm of thread protruding beyond the nut onto which the stems are fitted, with the base of the stem being hollowed out to allow it to seat squarely on the frame, encapsulating the nut within. The stems can therefore be removed at any time without disturbing the engine mountings.

We used aluminium for the stems. No doubt there are many views on the suitability of various materials and how 'bungs' should work but these look the dogs testicles. I don't particularly relish the idea of reporting on how well they work!

Anybody got any photos? Are the bungs attached to engine mounts? Is there any danger of snapping off an engine lug if the bike is dropped.
Of course , Tigers don't drop at speed , only at walking pace !!

Hi all (its my 1st post). Ordered a set of these from my local non triumph shop.
Yes they are uneven so I sent them back. R&G say that they know about this and are working on a new set. Should be ready in about 2-4 weeks. I've asked my local to get a set when they are done, so if you are thinking about this option, hang on and see what they come up with!
All the best, Noj

please let us know when you get your new bungs from them,as i would like to have a word with them about the uneven bit,and see if they will swop one of the stems,so they both match.
