Hi Guys,

I know that there's been some discussion about this in the past, but has anyone bought one of these?

I'm torn between the Rider and the Quest 2....I like the fact that you can plan routes on the PC with the Garmin, but the Rider has all the bits required, with no extra mounts needed.

I have an Intaride intercom and I wondered whether anyone had connected the Rider Bluetooth receiver to their intercom?

I already use TomTom Navigator 5 in my PDA in the car, so I have all the maps I need, but I've tried to put together a waterproof solution for the PDA on the bike and it's not a very neat solution.

What do you think?

Ride Safe!

Ken...

Hmmm..Looks like the Garmin might be a cheaper option after all.

According to TomTom, I cannot use my existing maps in the Rider (maybe they're just trying to make more money of course!).

So, the full European maps add £176 to the price.....far too expensive!

Guess I just answered my own question!

Garmin is cheaper, but....

the Tomtom runs linux, which means it's all GPL'ed and is/will be hacked to it's true potential, which at the end of the day means it's much more customisable and has a lot more potential than any Garmin could ever dream of.....

All sounds good to me, but then again I'm biassed.....

The Quest2 is a great GPS for a Biker. I have read somewhere on the www that the screen is much better than the TomTom in sunlight i.e. actually on the bike.

I bought a RAM mount for my Quest you also have to shell out another £50 or so for the on bike power supply which is a pain. My Quest will link into my Starcom1 intercom by cable. There is no blue tooth.

Being able to plan routes and waypoints on a pc to upload to the Quest is a great feature. I was not aware you could not do this with the Rider. All GPS systems are quirky when it comes to data entry, route planning etc. As you are used to a TomTom I suggest you try a Quest out to see if you can get along with it before you buy.

Hi all and thanks for your comments!

I've decided to go for the Quest 2 as the Rider was going to be more expensive after all the map additions and also, the Garmin has a much easier installation.

The Rider doesn't have an audio out connection to connect to my intercom, so the only way to do it is using the Bluetooth receiver. Easy to connect, but then you have to put some sort of power supply in for the Bluetooth unit as well as the GPS unit itself....Just too messy!

The Quest doesn't have the 3D display that the TomTom units have, but I can still have all my Speed Camera and other POIs, so it'll do just as good a job.

The PC planning facility is great though, as you can still be involved in your tour even on those dark, rainy or snowy nights...with a glass of malt beside the PC!

Thanks again guys and I'll let you know what I think about the Quest 2 once I've had a chance to play.

Ride safe!

Ken... :-g

Hi Ken,
Where did you mount the intaride intercom on your Tiger?

I'm looking at mounting mine behind the dash. Seems an ideal place between wiring loom and fairing bracket.

I kept looking at the Quest but in the end brought a Garmin i3. Not waterproof or fitted with headphone socket as std. Didn't take 10 mins to add headphone socket and freezer bag seems to keep dry tucked under the screen. Well impressed with it so far.

Cheers

Paul

Would linux base imply far greater potential now and further on down the road?
