Get a dedicated GPS unit. Do you really want children to play with Palm/Pocket PC devices that will cost you about £200 and upwards. Keep them happy with a separate MP3 player.

A stand alone GPS can be used on the bike and in the car. Look at the Garmin range, Quest, 2610 both of which are waterproof. Or, there is the new Tom Tom Rider about which I know nothing.

I use a Navman iCN 520 on a RAM mount with a home 'reverse engineered' (i.e. butchered Navman cradle) to mount it on the Tiger. Waterproofing is achieved by use of a polythene bag and elastic band.

The bottom line is cost. How much do you want to pay? Whatever you get you must factor in a bike mounting/power supply system.

Hi,

I have a Garmin quest mounted on the Tiger. It is a dedicated GPS for around £300. It does not play movies or MP3's. But it is waterproof and shock proof. You can download Speed Camera maps & things but you do not get a spoken warning. You also have to buy a mount and Bike adapter and fix a loudspeaker in your helmet to get spoken directions.

The TomTom rider is just out for £600. It has 3D maps and I believe you get spoken warning for Speed Cameras. Again no MP3 etc. It may come with all the bike fittings. Previous TomTom's have been criticized for having a screen you cannot read in bright sunlight.

I looked at PDa's but they are not waterproof or shock proof. I tried my Palm with Via Michelin maps in the car and could not read the screen.

I think the Quest is a good compromise and it works on foot or in the car. I'd buy a separate gaming console for the kiddies.

I used a "RAM" mount £10.00 which I fitted to the Tiger Fairing using a home made Aluminum bracket. Not difficult. The Quest is mounted above the speedo and just below the screen. The Quest comes with a Mount you could use but the RAM mount is more secure because a clip fits over the Quest to hold it down.

Garmin make a Motorcycle mounting kit £50 to go with the Ram Mount. This includes a transformer to step down the 12v to 5.3v and a 2.5mm jack plug to connect to headphones.

It's a pain to have to spend another £60 but it's worth it. RAM supply a whole range of mounting brackets. Check out their web site.

Touratech also do a very sophisticated M/C mount which I guess costs £70 +. A bit over the top in my opinion. BMW riders use them alot. Partly because their bikes shake so much and partly because Touratech is a desirable brand.
