Hello all,

This is my first post. I am the proud three week owner of an '05 Tiger with which I am well pleased. However, I find,as many of you do, inadequacies in the stock windscreen. As an instructor pilot who routinely teaches aerodynamics classes, it always troubled me that there seemed to be such little airflow on the riders side of the windscreen. This would allow for an extreme low pressure area behind the screen and consequently a stall or vortex resulting in terribly turbulent air.

The fix: I bought 4 #10 stainless steel bolts that were 1/2 inch longer than the stock nylon bolts(4) that fasten the screen to the front fairing. I then bought 8 rubber grommets that are 1/4 thick and placed two each between the screen and fairing. This raised the screen off the fairing 1/2 inch all way around. This should allow air to flow beneath the screen resulting in an efficient airfoil and hopefully precluding the turbulent air with which are all too familiar.

Results: It works within the limits of the size of the stock windscreen. It is still no goldwing, but I think none of us want that. It does however "clean up" the wind that makes contact with the rider. I leaned over the tank with my head close to the screen at 70mph and the air was still and quiet. I would be interested in trying the same modification on a larger screen. I have a CB #2 +6 enroute and will try it on that one as well.

Caveats: I am confident in the securityof this setup on the stock screen. When going to a bigger screen, I suspect the modification will need to be more robust.

I hope this helps.

I know you are new to here being your first post and all that!

BUT Please. please, please, please

DO NOT put solutions to the buffeting problem on line.

keep them to yourself and grin at the discussion of cb/vario,lami/whatsits

it is the only thing keeping this place going

(and clutch levers)

:-D

Sorry Welcome

PS
don't mention tires

I mentioned them once but I think I got away with it

Robbie,

What specifically should we not mention about tires?

Hello all,

Hi

Your fix sounds really quite simple to achieve even for the less technical amongst us.
Based on your comment "This raised the screen off the fairing 1/2 inch all way around" I would be very interested to see some pics of this from an aestetic perspective to judge for myself what it does to the lines of the Tiger.

Also, you haven't mentioned what colour your ride is.

I also look forward to seeing have what you can do with a CB #2 +6 so can you provide pics of this too when completed?

Oh and - welcome by the way.

I wonder if increasing the cut out in the bottom of the screen to allow more air flow here would give a similar result?

DJR,

I have increased the size of the bottom cut out on my Jack Lilley screen, cut out a sort of half moon shape. It decreased the buffeting a fair bit (my eyes no longer vibrate in their sockets!). It's still not perfect but it's a cheap fix and from looking at all the other posts there aren't any screens that work for all speeds!

I have solved the problem, at least for me. I was able to run 90mph plus with NO buffetting.

Solution was easy. Laminar Lip plus covering the existing intake at the bottom of the Stock screen.

The CB should arrive tomorrow and I'll dig up the camera( just moved) after it is installed with mod. Thanks for the feedback.

So Axe, how did you make out with the additional mods to the screen? I agree that height is not the only factor here (apart from the obvious wind direction and rider height) but buffeting can come from around the narrow screen just as bad.

2nd Space - can you give details of your fix? I got the blocking of the intake hole (but with what?) but what is and where do you put a 'laminar lip?'

I am 6'4" and it is noise and turbulence that kills the pleasure of the Tiger for me.
