Thunderbike Crash Bars
Being that we have Ozzie'S and Kiwi's on the board I figured I can ask about the Thunderbike crash bars. The mounting directions say to attach the lower bracket to the crankcase? Is this safe?
Do any of you have these on your Tiger and have you (God forbid)
had to test them?

Crash Bars
Tengu
Sorry not from down-under but I’ve got Thunderbike crash bars on my 885i and my 955i.
The 885’s been down a few times and the bars have done there job and offered full protection to the bike all at zero mph though.
Not tried the bars on the 955i yet but they are the same design.
There isn’t much else to fix to apart from the crankcase on these bikes and if it’s a high speed crash your contemplating no bars going to give you much protection, there really to protect from tip over’s.

I really like the look of the Thunderbike bars, but I went with the Touratech. They look like they came with the bike and will do the job of protecting that expensive tank if the time comes, which is the only reason I put them on.
One nice (essential) thing about the Touratech is that they do bolt up to the crankcases, however the joint is made using a tear-away rubber (like a vibration damper) which will break in the event that your shiny new crash bars try to break your dirty old crankcases.
Good looks or not, I put the bars on to save money. It's no good to have an unscathed tank when your crankcase is bleeding oil. It's likely that they wouldn't break the cases in a minor tipover even if they were solidly mounted, but stranger things have happened!

I have an 06 Tiger with Thunderbike bars fitted by them (Thunderbikes) at purchase.
Been tested on both sides now at low speed. (Very very pleased with them)
Thunderbikes developed the bars to protect their hire bikes.
They start to look better when you learn just how well they actually work. Cheers John.

Let me test your memory
I got my Thunderbike crash bars yesterday at work.
The box has a square hole in the side (where I suppose it was inspected by customs?).
Inside is the LHS and RHS bars and one baggie with two longer crank case bolts and two washers. And a keyring and instructions.
I've got an '06 Tiger and it seems pretty cut and dry on installation.
But the rub is why only two longer replacement bolts only for the RHS bar? How did your bars come and did you use the two extra longer bolts?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jim

Thunderbike Crash Bars
I'm guessing you already found this link (instructions for mounting the TB crash bars) on the TB website, but on the off chance that you missed it there, here it is anyway (I found it to be quite helpful): http://www.thunderbike.co.nz/spi/tbike_tig
They mention needing longer bolts on some older models but reusing existing bolts on newer models. It has been a couple of years since my bars went on (2006 model), but I don't recall having any problems whatsoever with any of the fasteners not being correct. They do warn against over tightning anything and they also mention using a proper thread sealant.

Got the bars on in less than and hour. I guess the two longer bolts are for the oil side of the crank case. They look great and feel like they'll do the job.

My 1999 has been a testbed for the TB Bars. Lots of falling over, some sliding along on the bars, the paint doesn't lie! The bars always took the hits, the tank is still perfect. If you have an incident that breaks the case, your broken body parts will overshadow the bike damage!

My TB bars came in handy the other week when some drunken SH decided to sit on my bike outside a hotel at 3am. The steering was locked and it fell on a too closely parked HD land yacht. Not really sure what happen other than my Tiger was down on its right side along with the HD. Mine had a scrape on the crash bar, a couple of minor scatches on the right bag, and it broke my $89 JCW top box apart. The HD suffered serious cosmetic damage and was barely presentable with all the chrome flakes coming off. The Tiger handlebar also put a nasty claw mark on the HD custom painted fairing. Without the protruding TB bars there would have been more damage to the Tiger's tank, side covers, seat and maybe more.
I violated my own rules about parking overnight- center stand and cover with cable lock running through the bottom frame and wheel. Also a reminder not to park another bike so close that it can be hit in a fall.
Who would have thought they wanted to sit on a Triumph more than an HD...?
