Sorry to be a bore and ask a most likely stupid question but...

Just bought a 54 Tiger and it has an aux power point to the left (BMW style) but has a normal car sized one on the dash...

Am i right in assuming that they only come with one aux power outlet as standard? The one on the dash doesn't appear to work with anything i've tried in it and i dont have the correct adaptor to try the smaller BMW style one.

Is there any way to test wether there is any power flowing through it and what could be the problem if there isn't?

I know it's a big long ramble but any help is much appreciated!

Big long ramble? Hardly a stutter compaired to some of the drivel typed in here. Wecome aboard by the way, keep asking your questions, you will get answers from the masses.

You are correct the bike only came with the one on the left side as standard. I suggest that you start checking the other one by tracing the wiring back from the socket to where the previous owner plumbed it in, check all of the connections as you go & chjeck for fuses, relays etc. I would do this as a matter of course for added electrics as you don't know the competence of the installer, if you are unsure about working with wiring find a buddy or tame spark who is & play on their good nature.

Welcome to the forum, mate

Agree with Big D, either trace the wires back, or put something attached into a standard car 12 volt adaptor into the socket and check if you've got a supply. Just remember not to put too high an ampage through it.

My guess is it was for a GPS system - any marks on the handlebars where the clamps went ?

You're in England, it's an English motorbike, and it's an electrical problem. Go to the pub and raise a pint to Lucas, Prince of Darkness!
And somewhat seriously.....It may be wired into the switched circuit behind the panel. Check it with the ignition on and off. It sucks to plug something in to an unswitched circuit and kill the battery! Best guess it's wired into the heated grips circuit....but then again, it's English!

Thanks for your replies.., and the warm welcome :-)

I've tried plugging a rechargeable lantern in that works fine in the car but not in the plug on the bike. I've tried it both wwith the engine running and turned off and the charging light never comes on.

Gonna get the fairing off at the weekend and check out the wiring...i'm no electrical wiz though so might just have to get an adaptor for the standard BMW one the bike comes with.

Bye the way i can't see any marks on the bars where sat nav might have been but it's fitted with a touring scottoiler so i'm assuming someones been around a fair bit on it although it's only done 9500 miles.

Hi

I manged to get the cockpit off and have a look where the socket is connected to but it's harder said than done it seems. here are a couple of photos illustrating what the wires look like....

There are two red wires coming from the socket and i followed them back to the switch ringed in yellow...here one of the red wired loops back into another group of wires and the other is earthed on the frame it looks like. The problem is i can't see where the (live?) wire goes after this junction...looks like it goes under the yoke somewhere.

Any help at all please?

It looks to me like a car type cigarette lighter socket which are famously unreliable. If it were me I would disconnect it before it causes any problems as the sticky tape insulation looks a bit suspect.
You can buy plugs to fit the proper socket from Squaredeals Motorcycles for not a lot of cash.

The wiring and the crimps look very 2nd hand.

If it were me I would rip that lot out and start again. Wire via a fuse direct to the Battery. That gives many advantages of keeping a GPS running when getting fuel and so on.

Buy yourself a new volt metter. You can get one cheap new. I don't know why any one else didn't mentioned it. You might as well have a bag over your head without a meter. Absolutely nessity for work on electronics.
But hey, I ride an 07 so what do I know.

Is it right that you can also charge your battery through the accesory socket too then? or am i reading the description all wrong? This seems like a great time saving idea!
