I've got my lights fitted and a foglight wiring kit (ring)loosley set up. the relay has a inbuilt 30 amp fuse which whenever i flick the switch causes the fuse to pop.

The feed wire to the relay via the sidelight wire.

What would cause the fuse to constantly keep blowing as soon as i flick the switch as I can't see anything wrong.

Have you checked that you have a good earth wherever you have chosen to fit it? or did you link in to the existing earth routes ?

Is the sidelight fuse blowing as well ?

The sidelight circuit works through a relay as well, so i don't know if there are any issues there or not ?.

I took my live feed from another switched live from the fusebox because i wanted the choice of when to switch the lights on independently of everything else, leaving the lighing circuits alone.

I'd double-check that all four connections to the relay are going to the correct pins - especially the ground (-ve). For a 30A fuse to pop, it sounds like you have a direct short somewhere.

Hi

what is a direct earth? and how do I ensure that I have a good earth- where did you use?

I earthed the lights to the engine bars and returned the earth during my experimentation to the same engine bar and then to the -ive battery, the fuse in the relay keeps popping. I am sure that the relay connections are correctbut i will double check

Boo

Hi Boocat,

I've drawn a sketch illustrating the way the foglights should be wired. The arrow comprising horizontal lines is accepted as the generic symbol representing an earth connection - i.e. a wire bonded to the frame of the bike.

However, if you're still having problems, it may be an idea to contact a professional to check it over, just to make sure all is well. It's even possible that the relay is faulty, for example.

The relay will normally have numbers associated with the connections on its base (85, 86, 87, etc). It's worth double checking in the supplied documentation to verify where they should connect in your circuit, and also it's worth noting that sometimes the numbers aren't directly next to the connector for which they are relevant - more "in the general vicinity"

Worth another look, anyhow!

Thanks Tcowjww,

My lights works a treat now, I earthed them to the engine bars with jublilee clips. I think I was linked up to the wrong wire from the sidelights, but I also changed the relay.

I really appreciate your help in this matter as I was about to throw the lights in the bin.

It is what we call the small bulb inside the headlamp unit. The first position on the light switch .....

Why, what do you call them in the U.S. then ?

It's no wonder we all get confused from time to time :???:

I think it's possibly a parking light - or maybe a position light?

How many positions do you have on your light switch? We just have hi and low beam in the US.
