Any experiences with Garmin Nuvi 550 on a Tiger?

Just discovered that this one is much cheaper than the Zumo and built for motorbike as well... tempting, but have any of you guys tried it out there in the real world? Besides, does it mount easily on a 2003 Tiger?

Thanks, but is this the Nuvi (or the Zumo)?

Should be able to mount w/o problems using a RAM mount.

have a 2610 mounted to my 06

For comments on 550 would check advrider.com and laying down tracks section. tons of info on various gps systems.

I have the Zumo 550 and am very happy with it.

Have you gone to www.garmin.com and compared the specifications?

Apart from not getting a lot of the bike friendly software features, you don't get :-
1. Hard dedicated buttons.
2. The RAM bike mounting hardware set.
3. The bike mount with power supply (the car mount is not waterproof).
4. The touch screen is smaller and may not work as well with gloves.
5. No Bluetooth.
6. No headphone outlet, so voice guidance is not possible on the bike, see 5 also.
7. No MP3 facility which doesn't really matter, see 5 & 6.
8. No gaurantee it's proof against the vibartions, exposure to chemicals and UV on the bike.

You do get what you pay for! The 660 is $ 100 cheaper than the Zumo 550, you get a bigger screen, better software etc.

In fact, do you want to buy my 9 month old Zumo 550 and I'll have the Zumo 660

I was just about to start a thread on the Garmin Zumo 550 as I am confused and trying to mount mine on my Tiger. I apologize if my question is a little different than the thread title, but How the heck to you connect the darn thing to a switched electrical source? If anyone knows, please be specific.

I would go for the tom tom rider its half the price of the garmin & you get the ram mount- blurtooth all in the box which will fit staight on to ur tiger.

Jamo,

If you haven't already got it, buy the garmin power lead and mount. It comes as standard with a new unit. Connect direct to the battery and job's a good 'un. You get a decent vibe free mount with no water ingress worries.

I love my 550. I am on my 3rd unit though. First 2 were replaced under warranty after they seized up.

My only criticism is the fact bluetooth streamed music is in mono, bugger !

Regards JJ

Yes, I have that lead. But if you connect direct to the battery, then the battery will run down when the bike is sitting, won't it? Won't the unit be a continual draw on the battery if it isn't switched? Does the unit itself have a on/off switch?

Bluetooth is my only gripe also, erratic synching and Garmin and phone (Samsung) is not stable, Nokia seems to be better, although that is partly down to the BT unit in my helmet. The 660 is A2DP BT as are many of the newer heaset / helmets so stereo there and hopefully better synching.

Yes it has, it only uses power when it's in the cradle and I always remove the unit from the cradle when I am not at the bike. I connected mine directly also and have had no issues. Handy when you stop for a short while, just pause the sounds and hang my lid on the bars and it's all up to speed when you are ready to go.

There are some experiences of the 660 over on teh Roadie forum Roadie 660
