I know they dip when the bike starts but I assumed this was caused by the starting load.

Maybe they did actually cut out. I will need to do some checks.

Are the light units Hella or the relays?

relays are hella. I was stupid (lazy!!) enough to pay the extortionate Triumph price and they are plain old Hella ones but are diode types, specifically to produce this effect

The diode ones have this

on them to signify a diode.

Just a case of locating some hella relays with diodes to replace the plain ones I used.
