1050's oil issue. Triumph comes through

My 2007 Tiger has an oil consumption problem. A big one. Triumph and the techs at my dealer came through and found the problem and have the solution. It was the valve seals. A kit is in the mail and I should have the bike back early next week. Total warranty. It's nice to see both the dealer and Triumph working together to solve the problem.

Some of you have mentioned an oil issue with your 1050 engines. The valve seals are a good place to start troubleshooting. (Some Sprints as well.)

Did you have other symptoms? Shouldn't bad valve seals eventually foul plugs?

How much oil was yours using I use about 250cc per 1,000 miles and I am told it's within specs

Hozer, you've put another concern in my mind now. My plugs were absolutely clean. I'll let you know once I get the bike back how it all turn out. The only visible symptom (other than low oil and overheating) was on the exhaust. Black/brown oil smear around the exhaust pipe.

Johnparjr, I was using anywhere from 1/2 quart per 500 miles to 1 1/2 quarts. I found it depended on speed. Faster rpm's, the more oil was pushed through.

And Playinthestreet, I can't wait to get "back in the saddle again"! I should have it back early next week.

I sure hope that fixes your oil burning problem--keep a close check on it. Burning that much oil, I would bet on broken rings...I don't know how they have managed to break rings on assembly of new engines, but it appears (from reading the tiger1050.com forum) that has been the case on a few Tigers.

Sounds like it's just the exhaust valve seal.

Whisper, that's great news about the warranty work. Good luck with the fix.

Wow. Triumph actually honoured a warranty claim? You must be in a unique club of 1.
We should have a collection or something and present you with a medal.

I've had 3 triumphs, 2 of which have required warranty work. I've had no problems with Triumph honoring the warranty. Biggest issue, a bit slow on the approval for one issue, but then all was very well looked after. This was the Sprint rear drag link failure and I was one of the first in the world with this problem, 3 1/2 months before the worldwide recall.

The second problem was a leaky battery on my 2 day old Speed Triple. All affected shock, exhaust compoents were replaced with no quibbling, and the rear swingarm cleaned and repainted.

So all in all, I'm not happy Triumph seem willing to accept a couple of % points more warranty work than other manufacturers but give them credit for honoring the warranty when needed.
