spare keys

this is interesting. I've ridden and driven for years and never done this. I wonder, have any of you ever actually needed or used these spare keys?

As the one who started this thread I have to admit I have never needed to use the spare key (either for my bike or the car) but I strongly believe that prevention is better than cure. Sod's law dictates that if you have it you won't need it.

good idea

Frankly seems like a good idea. When I purchased my Tiger used, I only received 1 key.
Come to think of it however in 28 years of riding I have only owned 1 bike that had a spare key (only one I ever bought new)........and I never used it. Hell most my early bikes didn't even have keys!!

losing keys

my wife has many fine qualities, but also a knack of losing keys. But so far she usually looses them at home and after a search they turn up in a boot, the freezer, or wherever. She once pulled her bike key out with a tissue when we were out for the day and dropped it at a National Trust venue we were visiting. When we came to go home she had no key. Luckily it had been handed in at reception.

So it's a case of so far so good.

thats right I always carry the spare key when I'm far away because once with another bike I lost the key on a journey and had to wait 4 hours in order to fetch the spare one

Like others I keep a full set hidden on the bike, but it would defeat the object to say where. Incidentally, I did need them once as I left the pannier / topbox keys on the steps outside a hotel in Caen before rushing to catch the ferry. A kind person who was also staying at the hotel and catching the boat returned them to me, but had that not been the case the spares would have been invaluable.

My standard "always with the bike" kit is:

C02 tire inflator and 4 cylinders
Small set of tire irons
Patch kit
SOG multitool
First aid junk
Clutch cable
Spare key hidden on bike

Much anything beyond that and you've moved past what you can fix at the side of a road on a modern bike.

Similar, but I have a Plug 'n Go tubeless repair kit instead of irons, patches etc. Being the puncture magnet that I am, this has saved my arse a few times!

I also keep a spare keys (including security device keys!) concealed on my bikes. I've used this a few times as well

I always take my spare keys on holiday when I'm far, far away in a distant galaxy. But, when I'm just on a ride near home(ish) I'll just call recovery and get a free ride home.

Same here. I have 2 keys (2 bikes) taped to the plastic insurance card in my wallet. The other 3 (f'ing THREE, sidebags, topbox, and helmet lock) keys are in the tool pouch under the seat. Is there a legitimate reason the top box and hard bags can't be keyed to the ignition/gas cap? Yes, Hinckley is lazy and cheap. Rant over.

On a recent ride to Monterey (Moto-GP) a Kawi rider in the group came up missing his only key after a bout of drinking in Big Sur. We had walked to the local watering hole from the campground, spent some time sitting in some adirondak chairs in the local stream having a beer (a highly recommended technique), and when we finally got back to camp one rider in the group decided his key was missing. He didn't have a spare. We returned to the bar, and Mr. Kawi went down to the river, on a hunch, to look for his key with a flashlight. An inquiry at the bar produced a key that a young girl had found in the creek just before dark. It said Kawasaki in it, so us normal folk bought our waitress (from dinner) a drink and waited for Mr. Flashlight to return. No sense in going down to the creek in the dark. Mr. Flashlight came back without finding his only key, and was contemplating his next move. He was mumbling something about FedEx.

We all made it clear that no one was interested in a passenger to the track the next day. Then we made him feel better by showing him the Kawi key and asking if he thought it would work. He had no words to adequately describe his relief, the dummy.

All of my vehicles have a spare key.
