Same here. I have 2 keys (2 bikes) taped to the plastic insurance card in my wallet. The other 3 (f'ing THREE, sidebags, topbox, and helmet lock) keys are in the tool pouch under the seat. Is there a legitimate reason the top box and hard bags can't be keyed to the ignition/gas cap? Yes, Hinckley is lazy and cheap. Rant over.
On a recent ride to Monterey (Moto-GP) a Kawi rider in the group came up missing his only key after a bout of drinking in Big Sur. We had walked to the local watering hole from the campground, spent some time sitting in some adirondak chairs in the local stream having a beer (a highly recommended technique), and when we finally got back to camp one rider in the group decided his key was missing. He didn't have a spare. We returned to the bar, and Mr. Kawi went down to the river, on a hunch, to look for his key with a flashlight. An inquiry at the bar produced a key that a young girl had found in the creek just before dark. It said Kawasaki in it, so us normal folk bought our waitress (from dinner) a drink and waited for Mr. Flashlight to return. No sense in going down to the creek in the dark. Mr. Flashlight came back without finding his only key, and was contemplating his next move. He was mumbling something about FedEx.
We all made it clear that no one was interested in a passenger to the track the next day. Then we made him feel better by showing him the Kawi key and asking if he thought it would work. He had no words to adequately describe his relief, the dummy.
All of my vehicles have a spare key.
