Might be in the market for a Tiger...

G'day all,

My circumstances might be changing, we may be relocating to the north west of Australia (Port Hedland) and I'm thinking that if it happens, I'll be looking for a different bike.

My riding now consists of mainly day trips and always looking for the nice twisty route. Where we are contemplating living is very remote with desert to the east and big distances to cover to get anywhere north or south.

I'm thinking Tiger and one that will eat up the dirt roads, it wouldn't be a tar baby.

Which is the pick of the 955's? Anything peculiar I should look for? It would be solo use and two up, probably my transport and weekend toy. If all of this comes to fruition, I would like to cross the continent eventually which means thousands of long straight miles.

Is the Tiger the logical choice here? Fuel consumption/range is a major factor, as is comfort and reliability.

I would appreciate your comments and advice,

Cheers,

Roden

Can't think of anything in your list of requirements that the Tiger won't tick off with ease.

Gel seats for that cross continent trip, and maybe a replacement screen if you find the standard one too windy but that's all that's 'wrong' with the stock bike.

Pick of the 955's ?? Could be as simple as which colour you prefer.

Thanks Fife Tiger, as I thought.

As I'm reading my way through this forum, I see that the newer 1050's are more purely a road machine whilst the 955's with spoked wheels are more capable in the rough stuff.

The climate and conditions in the north west can be very harsh with temperatures sometimes climbing into the 50's (celcius that is). The wet season produces monsoonal rains so all the elements are experienced (except snow and ice).

Are there any particular upgrades you guys do to combat these sorts of conditions? I'm thinking stuff like bash plates under the sump, crash bars, that sort of thing.

It would be a whole new world of riding for me, very different.

Cheers,

Roden

Definitely crash bars (Touratech are the bee's knees), and a touring screen from Eagle Screens in W.A. A puncture repair kit would also be a must for the kind of travel you envisage. I get 320km before the low fuel light comes. I've never run it dry, but when the light comes on I can only get around 17 - 18 litres into the tank, so there must be about 5 litres left, which in theory should be good for another 70+ km.

Thanks Roger, from what I can gather, there isn't much more than 200klms between towns so fuel stops can be planned, during the day that is. Apparently at night, everything is shut!
Traveling at night wouldn't really be good anyway with the wildlife and cows etc.

The spoked wheels are tubed right? That means wheel and tyre off for a repair so a centre stand would be handy I guess.

Has anyone looked at fitting tubeless rims?

I'll give you my '05 Lucifer Orange Tiger for free if you'll find me a decent job in N.W. Australia, and I can bring my family with me.

The 05 and 06 "girlies" came with cast spoke tubeless wheels and a little different engine tune (I THINK). Otherwise pretty much the same bike from about 01 on.
