Wacky fuel gauge

I ride a 1999 tiger and my fuel gauge does not work properly. I have taken it out and cleaned it but it still doesn't register properly (from about 2/3 full to near empty) it shows near empty to the low fuel light shining brightly in my eyes while driving around! I will probably have to change the sensor out unless anybody has any ideas out there?

Hi Curt,

Unfortunately, the Triumph fuel gauge has a mind of it's own

We just put it down to British quirkiness

Most people just rely on how many miles they've done on the trip counter.

As you may already know the '99 Tiger is always good for 250 miles on a full tank.

I know that doesn't help, but I hope that helps (if you know what I mean )

I have to disagree with the above. My gauge is good enough to rely on it. Let me explain.......
1) at the half way mark, it tells me that I have as much mileage left, until the fuel light, as I've just done on that tank.
2) the fuel light always comes on when the needle reaches the bottom of the red bit.
3) the fuel light always comes on when I've used 18 litres (4 UK gallons)
Having said that, I always reset the trip meter out of habit. Partly so that I can keep a check on mpg figures. Divide the mileage when the fuel light comes on by 4 = UKmpg.

IMO there's no such thing as an entirely accurate fuel gauge, car or bike. But my Tiger's gauge does the same thing every tank full. So, once you get used to it, you can tell how much fuel you've got left.

i agree with blacktiger,i have never had any problems with my gauge,it allways shows just what i have left,and it allways very acurate,and its 8 years old and 54,000 miles under its belt.

Does anyone know what goes wrong with the sending unit when it goes whack? I've pulled it out of the tank and there's not much to it, a float and a circuit board? Getting tired of watching the gauge go up and down all the time for no reason. I've got black tape over the light now. I almost wouldn't mind spending the $92 for a new sending unit if I could knoe for sure it wouldn't fail after 55k miles like the first one.
Bike is an 03 girlie with 56k miles.

Mine was quirky for the whole time I've owned it and then died at 55K.

mine is exhibiting those very symptoms. i think it has to do with a wire short, somewhere. mine started doing it after a service.

The gauge on my 885i was useless,but the low fuel light was always accurate.I relied on the trip meter was peace of mind.The fuel gauge on my 04 955 appears to be fairly accurate although I note from the service book that the sender was replaced twice under warranty.The fuel light is spot on comes on when 18 litres has been used.

guage

Thanks all. Sounds like the guage is not one of the strong points on the bike! If this is one of the only problems I have to worry about i'm laughing all the way to the bank! Just put on about 5000km in the last month and not a problemo except the wacky guage. The weather could be nicer though, been one hell of a cool spring over here in western canada.thank goodness for heated vests! Now there's another question, has anybody installed heated grips to there bars? I hear you can put the cheap wraps under the grips, not sure how they would fit under the throttle?

You can take this with a grain of salt since I'm in Arizona - might hit 100 in Tucson on Sunday - but I really like my Widder heated gloves. I've ridden at temps in the low 20'sF and my hands have been toasty!
