Distance on Tiger oil?

Hi. Just bought a 2003 Tiger 955i and have heard that the oil lamp on these engines are not very reliable. Anybody in here know how many miles approx. one can expect to be riding before having to add more oil?

All bikes are different in this regard so I would keep a close eye on the level for the first few thousand miles or so just to see what your particular bike does. I've done 17k miles on my 05 Tiger and never used a drop between services.

My 06 is the same at 6500 miles. Negligible oil use.

Whereas I have to top my 2003 955i up every thousand miles or so. It doesn't use a lot, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

and mine's just swallowed a litre. My own fault, hasn't had to be filled between services before, so haven't been checking.

Checked the morning my throttle cable snapped, not really a good start to that particular day !!

Espen36, please don't rely on the oil warning light to tell you the oil level. It won't. this is simply a low oil PRESSURE warning light and, with the engine turning, will probably still remain off with half the oil missing!

Better to check regurlay for the first few weeks as suggested. The procedure is layed out in detail in the owners manual and requires you to warm the bike to normal running temperature then, after switching off, let it rest for ten minutes before checking. My 06 is coming up for 10,000 miles nad has never needed topping up.

I've had 6 Hinckleys and done 000's of miles. 5 have never used a drop but the S3 uses a little. I check the oil level every 500 miles to be sure.

Utter bollox this. The light is extremely reliable. It comes on when you turn on the ignition and goes off as soon as you start the engine. Every time.

My 2002 Tig has 48000 miles, only time it's used a bit of oil was sustained motorways all day. Normal riding it goes between the 6K services with using a drop.....still.

Like anything else ever made I think they vary in oil consumption. My '06 used some oil. I've been running it 5k between changes on mobil one and it used very close to a quart between changes. It now seems to have slowed down since the last change as it has passed 12k miles. My dealer says he has seen some use oil for a while and then stop as miles accumulate.
I think best to assume your bike is your bike and check it as a matter of routine maintenance. As the other guy said, thats an oil pressure light, not a low level light. If it comes on because the engine is low on oil you may be in much bigger trouble than some slight usage.
