I came back from Switzerland through the Black Forest area, and I was disappointed to say the least. I think I'd been so spoilt by the brilliant roads & scenery in Switzerland / Austria / Italy, that the Blcak Forest paled into insignificance in comparison.

If you are going to venture as far as the Black Forest, please, please, please, go just that bit further into Switzerland and do the mountain passes - Furka, Grimsel, Susten, etc.

Click on the above named passes, on the link below, for a snap shot:

Oh no !! I've got a semi just thinking about them !!

if I had only 3-4 days to have some fun in Germany then the black forest is just a little to far or not far enough as Graeme says.
dont get me wrong it is a great place just go to my photos in the old gallery.

if it is fun you are after then I would look around the Mosel area and north

all the german flaver, good tiger roads not to much Mway to get there and if you like track days the best there is and all you need to do is turn up.

if you are going to put the effort in to go this far south then the alps from the french side are just as far.

if you have done them and want to go to the black forest because you havent been there then I can recomend Andy's bar. it is basic acomodation, great food, warm welcome, He is english but lived there for 30+ years, one word of warning dont get into a drinking compertion,

Have to agree with the lads here, I went through the black forrest a couple of years ago on the way to Switzerland. Nice Scenery ect ect and the roads pretty clear and smooth, however I cannot recommend the Furka and Grimsol, St Bernadeno passes in Switzerland.

If you like mixing it with the sports bikes, Great Twisties, Great Scenery and mile after mile of 90 degree hairpins you have to go. There is a great Campsite which sits in the middle of the valley about 2 miles between the Furka and the Grimsol and they are more than happy to keep an eye on your kit which we took advantage of spending 2 days just going up and down the 2 passes. Grat food and hot showers ect ect.

Not wanting to go that far, Try the northen most part of the Central Massif in France.

Wherever you go I would avoid the German autobahns, they are old worn out concrete roads full of trucks. I would recommend the area around the Nurburgring, very twisty roads, quiet and you can always try a lap or 2 of the Ring - every biker should do it.

I've not ridden in Germany, but have travelled there by car on a family oddyssey.

Of all the places we saw, there were a couple that stood out to me in spades, that would be great to tour on a motorcycle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxon_Switzerland is just near Dresden, so may be too far from you for a 3-4 day trip.

Down south, around Oberammergau, Linderhof and Garmish Partenkirchen (and the Schloss Neuschwanstein) is great too.

If you're looking at the Western egde, I found some neat roads just off the Rhine between Rhudesheim and Koblenz. When you're done riding, have dinner in one of the restaurants in the Drosselgasser in Rhudesheim. If you're into Falconry and walking up hills, go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Maus

I can't recall exactly where, but there are some roads around Hannover and east that are closed to bikes on weekends.

Just a few more ideas to whet your appetite!

Mick

There is no nice route from UK to Switzerland. We took the overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. Off the boat at 9am and rode 15 hours and 600+ miles in one go to Switzerland (we got lost several times and a group of 9 bikes in on/off rainy conditions makes slow progress). It was hard work on a Daytona ! If there is enoughh time, say 9 days,I would take an overnight ferry to France, for instance St Malo, then ride thru rural France via Issoire and Nyons, then into French Alps, say Gap,and onwards to Swiss Alps. All great roads and scenery and avoiding motorways. Then back through France a different way, maybe Dijon. Now that's a bike trip.

Check out the B500, it's an awesome road - we took it on the way back from Switzerland last year up to Baden-Baden on the way home to UK.
