Having had several bikes with Datatool alarms and now my 04 Tiger with a Meta alarm I much prefer the Meta alarm. When it auto arms it only immobilises. Handy at petrol stations. It doesn't chirp its head of when you get within a mile of it but does go off with genuine tampering. Plus the alarm fob can be incorporated into the ignition key. I'm sure there are other reasons but it just seems a far superior system in every way.

only you can answer that. Will it give you peace of mind? Probably. Will it stop a chance thief? Probably. Will it stop a determined thief? Probably not!

How often do we hear car alarms/house alarms going off somewhere and pretty much ignore it?

I seriously considered fitting a system a while back but after speaking to my insurance broker decided a bloody big chain does as good a job in most circumstances.

I have a alarm fitted called a "no limits". I think it is actually made in South Africa.
I like the fact that it imobilises the ignition and is wired to the topbox. It is absolutely no substitute for a cable/chain, but is just another level of protection and helps to deter oportunistic theives.

About 2 years ago I had a Kryptonite brand 1inch cable and a big $100 Abus lock an locked up my pushbike (I had bought the day before) in the main street of Melblourne at 11:00Am on a Saturday. It was prime time shopping and literally 1000's of people were walking past. I came back 5 minutes later and it was long gone. Someone must have used a very serious pair of bolt cutters in front of many many pedestrians. Maybe some kind of alarm would have alerted someone that it was actually a theft, rather than someone who had lost their key. Anyway, that's why I use one.

I have experience of both the Meta and Datatool. Much prefer the Meta and agree with Badger about the thing going off any time you so much as look at the bike.

I guess the Datatool is more of a deterrent, its louder and has the excellent movement sensor that gives increasing chirps as you move the bike when its on the stand (as in turn the bars, spin the back wheel).

If you are a weekend meddler you will get annoyed with the Datatool, but if security is a real prime concern I think its a better piece of kit.

My Meta alarm is considerably louder than the Datatool alarm on my wife's bike. :???:
