How to power a sat nav ?

Just come in from the garage after spending a fruitless evening with my 06 tiger trying to find power to supply my new Sat Nav with.

I want to take the power from the headlight area, so I only have a short wire with limited twists to the mount on the handlebars. I thought that the side/position lights would be the best bet to tap into, but I just appear to have blown the fuse for them trying to identify which is the power and which is the earth.

I have the fairing off and access to all areas.

Has any wise tiger been here before and is now leading a happy life with their Sat Nav?

There's a swiched and unswitched set of leads that are set up for the grips and accessories. I used them for the GPS and the voltmeter I installed. Like our Brit buddies say, it works a treat!

Thanks to both of you for that, bit silly taking off all the fairing now!!

I've tested the heated grips and the middle connection has power when the ignition is on, so thats good for the feed, but the top and bottom connections show power when you use the switch, so which do you use for the earth?

Being brought up on old Triumphs, means I can strip an engine in record time, but electrics....This is the first bike I have had with turn signals!! let alone an electric foot..

The connections for the heated grips are a bit weird if you actually have the grips fitted as you get backfeeding through the resistance. I found this out when I was trying to fit LEDs to remind me the grips were on....

Sorry, I admit it wasn't up to my usual (cough) crystal clarity. What I meant was that when you have either low or high switched on, there is a voltage at the "other" one. But the feed should be fine for what you want.

Don't bother trying to pick up a supply within the fairing as it will likely be switched via the ignition. Ie your GPS won't have power when you're stopped, and thats when you do the most button pressing, checking routes and data etc.

Simply run a supply directly from the battery with an inline fuse. Run it over the LHS of the engine using a straightened out wire coat-hanger. No need to remove the tank. Clip it to the main cables coming up to the bars and make sure you leave enough slack for lock-to-lock steering movement.

Depends on the GPS......
My Zumo 550 switches automatically to battery power when the bike is shut down, It automatically shuts down in 30 seconds if you don't tell it to keep going on battery power. From my own experience, anything on an unswitched circuit is a possible battery killer. I know the draw from a GPS is tiny, but a couple of days left on means click, click, click when the starter button is pressed! And to think such convenience only cost.....a whole bunch!

Unless you tap into the feed TO the ignition switch itself as I did 5 years ago and it has never failed. It's the big thick white one IIRC.
