How Does Your 07 and Up Tiger Shift?

Hello all,
I'm considering a new Tiger as a replacement for my Sprint ST, possibly this year. One thing I've been concerned with is the quality of the gearbox on the Tigers. The Sprint gearbox is just "okay". The best I've ridden so far is my friend's 03 Aprilia Tuono, and I really can't see how one could improve on it. Shifts were effortless and precise. I also rode an 07 Multistrada, and it had a great gearbox. So, I'd like to know your opinions on the gearboxes on your 07 and up Tigers. Thanks for the input!

I have 9500mi on my 07 and the shifting is ok by me. My experience with 955 and 1050 Triumphs is that they're all a little rough for the first few thousand miles and get appreciably better with 'age'. I've not ridden either of the other bikes you mentioned so can't compare.

I have a tough time hitting neutral when going from first to second. Also, my shift linkage has come apart for the second time.

The Triumph gearbox has character its not as slick as the Suzuki I had last but a big improvement over the clunk of the box on the BM I had before that.

I can't undestand why people always quote BMW when referring to bad gearboxes. The K100/1100 had lovely smooth changes and the latest R1200RT is superb.

In contrast, my 06 Tiger is fine during normal use, but can be really frustrating if you're making progress and try and change down a couple of gears under braking.

I'm convinced that some of the Triumph problems are due to the clutch dragging slightly.

My 07 gearbox started out feeling a little tight, but after a few thousand miles it smoothed out quite well. No issue with false neutrals or finding neutral. In the beginning I had a noticeable off-vibe at 5000 rpm steady throttle, but that's not there anymore. Clutchless upshifting and downshifting is not a problem.

Shifting is precise but takes a good positive throw, so I wouldn't say it is 'effortless'.

I had quite a bit of trouble at first, but I blame that on the rider not having ridden an EFI bike before. The bonnie is very forgiving and smooth shifting--I had to learn how to work the throttle and clutch on the Tiger. I did up-shifts without the clutch for a few hundred miles to get used to the throttle response to minute movements. After that I could shift smoothly--not as smooth as the bonnie, but smooth.

Finding neutral is no problem as long as you find it by feel--if you watch the neutral light, you will probably miss it because the light is very delayed in coming on.

Funny thing, I traded my 06 Sprint for an 07 Tiger. I loved the Sprint but it was too much of a sportsbike for my 6'6" frame. I would say the Tiger's transmission is getting smoother over time, a little clunky at first. I find shifting down during traffic stops from 2nd to 1st helps in finding neutral. Overall a great bike
