Some of you might already have read this, for those of you that haven't - go get yourselves Ted Simon's book "Jupiter's Travels", about his 4 year round the world trip on a Triumph Tiger back in the 70's. It's a brilliant read, taking you through the ups and downs of his trip, with everything beatifully described. The guy was 46 when he did his first trip, he did the trip again a couple of years ago - 2 1/2 years rtw at age 70!

For those of you who just thought - "no, reading the Long Way Round book put me off bike stories for a while" - this is a whole different league of writing, give it a go.

Ted's web page is on http://www.jupitalia.com/, if you like his book drop him a line on tsimon@mcn.org and let him know, I did and he just emailed me back tonight.

Apologies for getting poetic here, but this book really did make an impression - and it did make me want to pack it all in, get the panniers on the bike and take off....

Great link Torqey,

Thats cost me over an hour of work time already!!

Good to read he considered using a Triumph again and maybe even the Tiger, but shame to read :

"Triumph in the UK didn't want to talk about it. Why ? I don't know. Perhaps they didn't think it was ready for a trip like this. It certainly wasn't built for the desert. But then, neither was the old Tiger I took in '73. Whatever their reasons, they never bothered to tell me. Rude, but conclusive."

Looks like a good read for my upcoming vacation when I won't have my bike. Also, gets me psyched for the various tomfooleries I am hatching.

Thanks for the tip,
Fred

Jupiters travels is a great read. It is thoughtfulkly written. It is a shame that Ted Simon has chosen to continue his travels on a BMW though. The "idiosyncracies" of the Tiger is a major part of the tale and the bike has such a personality.
