Anyone famliar with French Alps - Annecy ?

We're thinking of a trip to the Alps in 2008. Previously stayed at Interlaken so Annecy would make a change and the chance to explore new parts. Intend to keep off the motorways so ride down from Caen through the Volcano region.Stay a couple of nights at Nyons to explore the edge of the Alps and then on towards Annecy as a base for a few days.
Any advice on reasonably priced hotels in Annecy or Frangy ?Probably about 6 of us. Also suggestions for best roads in the region, although looking at the map there are plenty to chose from.

Hi,

I have been there and all around that central and eastern side of France several times. Annecy is a really nice place to base yourself, or just to visit. The roads are flippin' mental but can get a bit busy with tourists after the end of June? The Volcanes region is a brilliant place to ride! I spent a week based in Clermont Ferrand and week in Roanne on separate tours. The Puy de Dome, Col du Mary are absolutely bonkers and a good challenge for the tigger!

I have got loads of routes for a garmin and photo's of the areas if you want to have a peep? ping me an e-mail and i will send them ok?

Cheers,

Jim

I've not been there on two wheels, but plenty of times on four. You can't go wrong on almost any of the roads that head into the hills, except when it's stuffed full of holidaymakers nose-to-tail, as the main says.

I don't have any specific recommendations but Logis de France is always an excellent standby. My personal preference would be to stay in smaller towns but chacun a son gout as they say.

Also agree with BigStripey re the Auvergne although the weather can be a bit unreliable (as of course it can in the Alps). If you want a thrill off the bike as it were, the Aiguille du Midi cablecar in Chamonix is well worth the trip.
