metzeler tourance EXP (new tyres)

Has anyone tried the new tourance EXP yet, I am looking at some new rubber for the new year, and I can get these new tourance for £159.00 a pair fitted, against the standard tourance, at £150.00.

I was toying with the idea of the new Conti trail attacks, which have a similar tread pattern. I can get those for £140.00 but I fit them myself (not a problem)

I have had 7 sets of standard tourance and done over 27,000 miles on standard tourances and I cannot fault them, apart from when they get to about 3mm tread depth they start to feel a bit loose under me, so I was thinking of a trail tyre with more road bias this time, hoping they might last a bit longer.

I also notice when I am scraping the pegs with worn tourances you can feel the blocks moving, so maybe a less blocky pattern might be an advantage.

i dont want road tyres,as i dont like the look of them on my tiger.

I was interested in these but I ended up fitting a set of Distanzias which, so far, are performing as well as my Anakees (or better with regards to 'squirming' when banked over).

The spec for EXP's gave me to understand that it was a road tyre which was cut to look like a trailie or Dual Purpose tyre. If so, this could be exactly what you are looking for.

I saw a write up recently on the Tourances. Metzler stated that the Tourance was overdue a revamp and they have given it more of a road bias. I fitted a pair of the old tourance on my 900 Tiger.I did zero miles on them as a 955 appeared in my local shop so I part exed so I've no idea how they perform.Might try the Tourances when the Anakees that are on now are due for replacing.Depends what general feedback is on them.

That was the other one I was looking at fitting as the price is excellent for the Avon Distanzias, they get a great write up in the article bike mag did on big trail bike tyres, what are they like in the wet? and how well are they wearing?
They are quite a blocky pattern so I was wondering about ride comfort and road noise, but to be honest at £121.00 a pair it might be worth trying them (saving £40.00)

I mounted a new set of EXPs two weeks ago. I took them to a local twisty mountain road and did a few laps to scrub them in. They turn in much sharper than Anakees with no squirm from the rear. On the second pass I was scraping pegs and having flashbacks to my sportbike days... should've worn the leathers. So far I'm impressed. There was some wear after 114 miles (on the sides)but I've never been accused of riding like a grandma. If they last 4600 miles, that's twice wot the Maxxis Presas lasted. Haven't had them on the dirt yet but will update next week.

4600mi from a set of tires!!! i thought that the 6000 i was getting out of the d607's was on the low side. the first set of tourences i had went over 10k. i will be needing new shoes in about 1000 and was going to try the trail attacks until i was at one of my local hang outs and a guy pulled up with the exp's since then i have been looking at them so i am intrested in all comments concerning both the conti's and the exp's

Actually quite impressed, Marauder. I use my bike all year round and in the crappy wintery conditions I have had no issues with theDistanzias. I've only had them on for about 500 miles so it's not easy to judge the wear rates yet....nor the ability to scratch hard because the roads have been just a little too iffy for that since I fitted them.

I did try a set of Distanzias on my mate's MZ Baghira in the summer last year. Even with the 21" front wheel, they were as grippy as the Anakees which I had on my Tiger at the time. I can't say I notice the road noise on my tiger.

Smile In praise of Distanzias

Having chalked up 6000+ miles on the Distanzias this year, I am looking to re-shoe in January. I think I am going to wait and see what a few more of you guys think of the Conti Trail Attacks before I change from the Avons - not least on price. They have been great for me - good in the wet and fairly predictable on gravel.(I'm no peg scratcher though!)
Happy Christmas all Tiger folk out there, and here's to the weather cheering up in UK for a few bright frosty rides.

I went and had a look at the new EXP today at my local dealer, and I was very impressed, but the price is a bit of a stoppie, they look great and they have a lot more solid side wall than the original tourance, I have found a guy locally who will digitally balance my wheels for £5.00 each, so the avons are looking a better bargain, at £130.00 fitted and balanced.

I would love to hear what anyone thought of the Conti trail attacks, as they do look like a superb bit of kit, and a price of £136.90 a pair aint out of the way.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, when I do get a new set of rubber I will do a full test on them and post it on here, after all tyres can make the bike a lover or a bitch to ride.

and i found out today that avons are going up between 6% and 15% on jan 1st and michelin have just put their tyre prices up by7% due to high oil prices,so we can expect rises from all the other tyre makers in jan by the looks of it.

fitted EXPs on my 955i Tiger in January now covered 5000 miles and the rear is shot-having had 2 sets of tourances from new ,I covered 22,000 miles,so these new ones are wearing twice as fast,
I do however think they are superior to the old ones - no problems wet or dry,but not twice as good...
I have replaced the rear as I'm off on a jaunt to France and Germany this weekend and have spoken to Pirelli/Metzelar customer services and submitted the tyre for examination by them to see if there is a problem with it?
I don't really expect anything from them, but if the current tyre only manages 5000 miles ,with the high mileage I do (18000 annually) it will be all change again- I'll keep you posted.
Any one else done some mileage on these tyres yet?
