I bought an '01 Tiger demo bike from my dealer, who told me it had the 885i engine. The manual confirmed this; however, when I went to insure the bike, the agent told me that the VIN search reported that it had the 955i.

Does anyone know how I can tell from the VIN, or other means, which engine it has?

Call Triumph and will the chassis number ask what engine it was shipped with and ask what the engine number is. Check this with the engine number on the bike.

You can tell it from the down pipes, bash plate, oil radiator and from the engine itself. Oh, and the graphics.

This is a 955i:

This is a 885i:

Have fun!

Probably the most obvious thing about the 885 motor is the external alternator (very automotive looking) that you can see sitting on top of the transmission case on the left side of the bike.
