My MVR Vario results

I just got back from a 39 degree ride with my new MVR Vario. Excellent! I left it at its stock adjustment and tried it out. I went through some twisties and realized I needed to get some speed to properly test it. I slipped onto the interstate and at 98mph it was solid. No head shaking at all! None!

But as we all know, each of us rides differently so I'm not endorsing this screen for everyone. I wish you all could just try it before purchasing. I'm a little over 6'1" at 190lbs. Long torso. You'll have to decide.

I did stand on the pegs at about 80mph to see if cleaner air was there. Just a tad. When I sat back down I didn't feel that shaking that I had with the stock screen and touring screen and also the Thunderbike's Sport and double-bubble. (You can tell I've tried everything!)

I'm extremely happy. I now know I could ride this bike anywhere without worries of getting rattled. Hope this helps others here. This bike is a keeper for years now.

That quote speaks volumes really! I agree.

Smith and Jones can't be wrong, surely! (lol) Cheers John.

In the standard position I'm guessing you mean the "lowest". Were you able to look over the screen comfortably? I'm about 3" shorter than you, and find the CalSci +9" pretty good but on occasion find myself looking through rather than over the top of the screen. Somewhat disconcerting.

playinthestreet,

No problem looking over the screen. It's actually about the same height as the Triumph stock screen, although I haven't measured it. I don't think you'd have any problem with visibility and this screen. Even with the adjustment of the vario section at its highest, I can't foresee an issue looking over the top. As a matter of fact, I was taken back a little at first as to how small the screen looked. I didn't think it would work because it's rather narrow compared to the touring screen and shorter. It actually looks great on my bike. I opted for the smoke grey model. It gives the bike a nice serious look now. Once again, you'll have no problems seeing over the screen to the road ahead.

I honestly didn't expect as good a result as happened. Sure, there is still a little noise, but no head shaking and that's what I was more concerned with. I can take care of the noise with ear plugs and a helmet "whisper" device, but the head buffeting was annoying to say the least.

As stated, for me, it's certainly a winner.

I'm sick to death of my crap aftermarket screen on the Tiger, it's a tall one but I still get buffet.

It's about time the screen manufacturer's actually put some effort into what they are making, instead of just making it longer and hoping for the best, lazy b'stards !!

As for the MRA Vario, it looks good and sounds as if it works, but it just doesn't look long enough to work.

For the Vario owners, can you unscrew the movable outer perspex and put a longer piece on from another screen to make it taller, or are all the bits bonded so so it can't be taken apart ??

It's about time this buffet problem was solved once and for all !!

Graeme,
you pointed out the Vario screen does not look long enough. But simply adding extra size to a screen does not in all cases alter buffetting and or wind noise. The Vario screen is one of a few brands that rigorously test their claims. Shorter, in this case, with an adjustable wind shield works for the majority of people. If you find it not perfect for you then you can if you wish cut down your old standard screen into a slightly larger wind shield and change this the the one standard on the Vario screen. I did this on my old TDM and on that bike it worked fine.

Hi Itchyfeet,

Are you saying the adjustable hinge is screwed onto the perspex and therefore you can change it onto another screen ??

If that's possible you make it higher and hopefully get rid of the buffet.

From what I read the Vario sounds as if it does a good job, and I want to try it. It just breaks my heart to pay £90 if it doesn't work !!

If there are some more good reports on here about the Vario, I think it's time to take the plunge.

The factors that cause buffeting are wide and varied, including the rider's upper body height, safety helmet design, fairing/screen design, wind strength/direction, type of road and traffic density and the speed of the motorcycle etc.

If you look at all the various forums, including the large touring bikes, this is always a discussion topic.

I've got a MRA vario screen on my 06 Tiger, which, is a definite improvement over stock. It also fits better than the original and unlike the larger alternatives, looks better than original.
The most important thing is, the ability to adjust the screen slightly, to meet changing conditions.

If buffeting is a major factor in your riding pleasure, buy a BMW R1200RT, although, there are still conditions when you'll get buffeted.

With the issue of screens & buffeting there are so many variables that I believe that there is no "one size fits all" answer. The biggest variable is the rider, bet there are no two of us which fit the same profile, the solutions seem to be as varied as the people. Having said that that the Vario does seem to sort problems for mor of the conributers here than any other. It certainly works for me..... One of the things which few people seem to look at with the buffeting issue is their crash helmet. I have an old HJC which was solid as a rock on my old Yamaha but bounced my head all over the place on the Tigger. changed to a Caberg & the worst of the buffeting went away. Changed again to a Schuberth & the problem was less still (noisy though). stuck the Vario on the Tigger & lost all of the buffeting completely & most of the noise. One strange side effect is that the visor will snap shut at just over 40 MPH, kind of auto close feature that it would cost a fortune to develope.

All in all it's like a dicussion on tyres. you read all you can and then make your own mind up with what suits you best.

Happy testing to you all................
