Suspension Upgrades for the 2007 Tiger?

I demo'd a 1050 Tiger Saturday. Nice bike. Lots to like about it. Suspension seemed a bit soft and handling was somewhat vague. It really didn't like a fast pass down a very bumpy paved road. Anyone here put a fully adjustable aftermarket shock and/or stiffer fork springs on a 2007 Tiger? Did it add a bunch of SPORT to the handling in the twisties?

Thanks for the reply. I had HyperPro springs on my Sprint RS. Better than stock for sure. I finally ended up with a Penske shock and the HyperPro springs up front. Wish I had gone straight rate springs with Race Tech emulators.

I'm sure getting the right size/rate fork springs for the 1050 Tiger isn't a big deal, especially if you can get stock measurements first. The harder deal is finding a fully adjustable shock with remote preload for the bike. Wasn't sure if anyone was making one yet and hoped a 1050 Tiger owner had already done this research.

You can probably find more info on suspension changes on the tiger1050.com forum. Many have talked about changing shocks--I have read more threads on that forum that mentioned Wilbers shocks more than other brands.

Garry - your response makes me think that maybe the Tiger you rode was not set-up very well.

If you ever take it out again, you can check the suspension pretty easy - front compression/rebound are screw-type and should be at 0.5 (hard) to 1.0 (soft) turns from full CW stop, rear compression should be set the same and is on the bottom left side of the shock. Rear preload (on the right side) should be around 10-12 turns from full stop for 1-up. Front suspension should have 2-1/2 to 3 lines showing.

As to aftermarket options, one rider at tiger1050.com has had his shock rebuilt and the oil replaced, with good results. A couple others have fitted aftermarket rear shocks - do a search there to see what others have used.

I am comfortable with the performance of the stock suspension, now that I have tweaked it right. It feels slightly more vague than, for instance, a Speed Triple, but it still feels quite precise and sporting. Mine handles fast paces on bumpy roads fairly well. If you liked the bike, it may be worth a second try.

Perhaps. It had 200 miles on it. I have no reason to believe the settings were not the stock ones from the factory. I'm looking for sportbike-like handling, not sport-touring handling. I prefer nimble to the point of nervous over "stable". That's why I sold my Sprint in the first place. I was hoping the Tiger had more SPORT in her. I know that getting sag set correctly, maybe dropping the front a little and tweaking suspension to taste can make a large difference in handling. Some cheap/minor suspension upgrades certainly improved my Wee Strom a lot.

I think I'm just going to chill for a few weeks on the new bike front and see what gets announced at the EICMA show in Milan next month (Nov 6 - 11).

+1. It was extremely disappointing. I also thought that perhaps it had been badly set up.... which doesn't speak so well of the dealer.....

I will be giving it a second chance soon.... But this time I will be asking for a screw driver and fiddling with the suspension, handlebar controls and ergonomics first.
