Steamer v Girlie v 1050 performance

A pal of mine has just passed his test and has test ridden the new Tiger. He asked how it has developed from the 93 Steamer I own, particularly the on road performance. I have ridden the new Tiger but not on motorways etc.
The new Tiger is obviously a road focused bike which has a better top speed and is much smoother.
However in the (to me) important acceleration bracket of 30-90mph for everyday use, the Steamer holds up pretty well.

Anyone have experience of the different models and are there any performance comparison tables?

Any info passed on to another, hopefully, Tiger owner!

Cheers

can't say 30-90 but at about 40-80, I have followed a 1050.

Fair enough I was keeping it up the gearbox, and the 1050 owner did admit to keeping his spinning but.....

it accelerated away from me like a bullet, just like my mates Sprint ST 1050, and even when we were keeping pace in the bends he outbraked me ridiculously.

Is it fair to say that even the 955 model can still trace its routes back to the Steamer of old, whereas the 1050 can trace its routes back only as far as the Sprint ST - and that's just for the engine ?

There's a big difference in lineage there, Triumph have come a long way in engineering terms and yuo should expect to notice an appropriate 'improvement'.

IMHO.

I've ridden the 955i in a Sprint RS and can tell you for sure that the 1050 motor is significantly stronger. Especially in the low end and mid range. The 1050 is 'right now' throttle response, whereas the 955 needs to wind up.
I think 'BIKE' said something like: "the 1050 walks away from the previous model at any revs in any gear ..."

I've had a 885i a 955i & now have a 1050, as you would expect the lighter more powerful 1050 accelerates a fair bit quicker than the other two, & because of the lighter weight & more sporty set up it handles better, IMHO.
But to be honest I liked em all especially the 885.

i have ridden the 955 and the 1050. the 1050 is nice but i was exhusted trying to keep up with the bike. it was geared at the guy that was riding sports bikes and wanted something that had more relaxed ergo's while not giving up the sportiness. for me i prefeered the 955 with the 19" front tire where the turn-in is not as crisp. i can relax while i ride my 05.

I haven't tried the 1050 but like brgtiger what I like most about the 955 is its flexibility and relaxed feeling even at high speed. It's just what you need when it's chucking it down with rain, you're tired and hungry and looking for somewhere to stay for the night.

Seriously, the whole mostest horsepower thing is quite over rated. In everyday riding it's hardly ever a factor. Only when ya pin the throttles with your mates does the extra oomph really matter. Is that *why* you want a 1050?

While there is a point at which you can have almost too much horsepower, the 1050 isn't even close to that. Higher output from similar engine size means that it doesn't have to work as hard to do a given task. You will realize better fuel economy, longer life from engine and when needed............incredible flogging potential. Now mind you that is at an apples to apples comparison ie.. Both driven at same rpm etc.

I have had a 955i and now have a 1050. The 1050 is by far the better bike if you do not go off road.

the bike can be ridden fast or slow and easy fashion> the engine and gearbox are very good. You can stay in 6th gear and the bike will pull like a train from 35mph to what ever... you can drop a few gears and it becomes a sports bike. The choice of tyres is much better too. All this is IMO
