The Scrambler is about exactly as good for off-road as the current Tiger is. Meaning, you can do it with either if you're a glutton for punishment, but both are far from optimized for the job.
Remember, the picture linked by daytonatom is only an artist's concept, and a montage of existing bike parts at that. If Triumph were to give it some off-road ambitions, it certainly wouldn't have those tires, for instance. It would be entirely practical to adapt the 675 suspension to produce a very light and nimble machine that's much better suited to the wilderness than any of the existing Triumphs. And that is also the answer to Mudhen's objection:
> May as well be the same as the one they've got now...why would they bother with that? Just the reduced price point?
Not hardly! First consider at the difference between the Street Triple and the Speed Triple...not so much in purpose, but there's almost 50 pounds of weight difference. The "little brother" ends up being very nimble. Now consider that even in its modern slimmed-down version, the Tiger weighs 436 pounds dry, a good 20 pounds more than the S3. Can you imagine what a difference there would be offroading a bike that's maybe as much as 70 pounds LIGHTER?
(In reality, it probably wouldn't be quite that much, as they'd want to beef up the suspension a bit. But still, it'd be a huge improvement over the big Tiger.)

I overhead someone the other day say that a French Government official had said that his countrypersons need to stop dreaming and actually do something. Bit harsh, but makes you wonder.

the scrambler, while being a blast to ride, and attracting more attenetion than any bike i have ever had is a bonneville with about 1" more suspension. i have riden it in a field and in the gravel but it is about as off road worthy as a SUV.

My take on a possible "Tiger Cub" is that, whilst there is a market for an off-road capable bike, it may not be a big enough market for Triumph to bother with. I see them going the easy route by doing a smaller version of the 1050 in the same way as the Street Triple is a smaller version of the Speed Triple.
That, of course, leaves the off-road/explorer market to the likes of the Trans-Alp, XT660, F650GS and for the serious and seriously tall the KTM690Adventure which will be launched soon. But, you never know. With Benelli bringing out that 1130cc Amazonas fitted with TCK80s it may stir Triumph into action.

A sound point. I'd guess proper marketing of off-road (and off-road-ish) bikes takes a different kind of investment than adding another bike to a street lineup. You want to go sponsor things, have some scrambles and so on--all the sorts of things that KTM, BMW and the Japanese have yards of experience with. Without such activities to raise the profile, an entrant in off-road, whatever the size, will be doomed to niche folks (like us) who follow such things. Sales obscurity.
Hire me, Triumph--! Hire me!!!

Somehow Triumph have to be convinced there is a market for a more offraod oriented Tiger Cub. Which will be tricky at least in Oz where sales of the 'roadie' tigger are up 100% over the 955

But is that because it's a new model per se, rather than because it's a more road-orientated new model?
In any case, we've all seen the ads for nearly-new GS1200s where the owner has moved on to the next greatest thing..."Low mileage, never taken off-road"!
