So, I was doing a little routine maintenance yesterday

cleaning and oiling the chain when I decided to check the oil. So I took it for a ride and got it warmed up and running for awhile. Took it back to the garage, let it sit for 10 minutes per the book. Stood it up and took the dipstick out wiped it clean, screwed it all the back in to check the oil. Come to find out it was a little over a half a quart low on oil. Is this normal? Do these bikes burn oil like the beamers do?
Thanks
LS

I'd do a re-check before I would worry too much.

My 06 hasn't used a drop in 11,000 kms. Except for the seepage out of the neutral light switch!

I did check and re-check, I was surprised to find that it did use oil. I will keep my eye on it from here on out. It has a little over 14000 miles on it.

Cool Oil usage

Hi LS,
My '06 started using about a quart in 2,000 miles with about 8,000 miles on the clock. Dealer determined center cylinder rings were not properly seated. Warranty replaced the center cylinder sleeve and new rings on all 3 pistons. Now with 17,000 + miles, she still uses about a quart in 4,000 miles. Based on the grin factor she gives me, that much of an oil addiction is OK by me!

Cheers, Gary

Hmmmm, interesting. You would think that they would be smoking if they were using that much oil and mine is not smoking at all. Makes you wonder where that oil is actually going. I will get back to you after I see what the dealer says about it using oil. Mine goes out of warranty this November so I really want to make sure this is not a problem that will haunt me further down the road.

Mine didn't smoke or gunk up the tailpipe either. When I noticed the oil use I asked the group here about their experience. The response went from using none, never to a quart in 1,000 miles. Couldn't determine any common denominators. Get your dealer to do both a compression check and a diferential leak down test. That's how they determined the #2 cyl. was the problem.
Cheers,

My '01 used a quart every 2,000 miles for all of the 30,000 miles I owned it. Never saw a puff of smoke, blackened tail pipes, or gunk on the plugs. I just lived with it. Opening the engine up to reseat a set of rings seemed like way too much work for what I viewed as non-problem. Just look at it as a way to get fresh additives in on a regular basis in-between oil changes.

Well it sounds like some of them do and some of them don't. I feel a little better about it hearing from some of you with higher mileage on your bikes that had no serious issues with the bike with it using oil. I am still going to have it checked out by the dealer since it is under warranty, if they find nothing it is going to just have to be something I will get used to.
Thanks again
