First off, a BIG Hello to all, this is my first post so please be gentle!
Got about 1-2 weeks of waiting before my 05 Orange "Baby" lands at the dealers,I've been counting EVERY day!
My question is regarding the "running in" period and exactly what it involves.
The reason being that I want to get it out of the way asap so would like to plan days off work, routes to take and book the first service.
I know it's not very exciting but if somebody could let me know I will be a happy man.
Thanks
Col

Hi there, and welcome to the forum, your contributions are appreciated here. It is always good to talk with 'newbies' about their buying experiences and the reasons why etc. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience here, use it if you have any doubts or problems. It's a lot cheaper than the dealers sometimes
Running in is straightforward really:
0 - 100 miles = 3,500 rpm (bit of a chore but soon over)
100 - 300 miles = 5,000 rpm (75 mph in top)
300 - 600 miles = 6,000 rpm (90 mph in top..getting better!)
Oil and filter change at this point
600 - 800 miles = 7,000 rpm (licence losing speed)
800 - 1000 miles = 8,000 rpm (3 months in jail speed :-D )
Not too bad really, soon out of the way and then the fun really begins

Hi Macca.
Its well worth the wait, just try not to chew the nails down to the quick while you do it.
One little tip, seeing as how you still have a couple of weeks left before you get your leg over your new toy & you seem determined to get it run in as quickly as possible.
Check with your dealer now & make sure he can do your first service during your first week of ownership, better checking now than being told when you pick it up, "Sorry mate, its three weeks till we can get you booked in," it happened to me & I can tell you I was less than pleased with my dealer, how many people do you know that take 3 weeks to do 1000 miles on a new bike? You would think that knowing they were putting a new machine out they would keep a slot free four or five days after delivery at least.

Jim,
Thanks for the information, doesn't look to bad once the first 100 miles is out of the way!
D
I did exactly that myself two years back with a new Aprilia, racked up the first 600 miles in two days only to be told next service slot is 10 days time.
New bike sat in the garage for 10 days!!!!
That's why I want to plan things a little better this time round.
Cheers
Col

Macca,
Welcome mate, I have a silver 05 and did the run in in less that a week :-D took it everywhere, even to post the letters when a post box is only 5 mins walk, I rode 20 miles each way :-D
BigD is right check they have a slot, I see you had an Aprilia which one, I have just got rid of my 02 RSVR, did you use any of those boards to?

Mutley,
Quite ironic that the Aprilia thing has popped up.
About two yrs back I was looking at getting back on the road after a 4 year break but couldn't decide on a suitable bike.
I was looking at a cruiser, which I had never had before or a big trailie of which the 1150 gs was my favourite, looked at the tiger but didn't get me going if you know what I mean?
Could decide which way to go so thought sod it I'll buy a VFR all thing to all men!
Went to a dealer to look at a Honda and fell in love with an Aprilia Futura, not everybodies cup of tea but I liked it and it was 2 1/2 grand cheaper than a VFR.
Bought one, did 1500 miles then sold her.To much weight on the wrists!
Not really bothered finding anything else, until about 3 wks ago opened a magazine and saw an advert for the 05 tiger in orange.
I just had to have that bike, placed my order, and now I'm just waiting, an waiting an waiting.

Just remember; change gears - don't run at (one) steady speed - and DON'T lug the engine.
It goes pretty quick, really.

I arranged to pick my tiger up when I had some time off work. As soon as I knew the exact dates, I booked the 500 service for the afternoon the day after.
I picked the bike up on a Tuesday morning at OYTriumph near Aylesbury and rode over to south Wales, up through the middle of Wales and stayed over night in Caernarvon.
Next morning headed back to OYT and arrived at 14:00hrs with 501 miles on the clock.
They did the service while I waited and relieved me of £52. Then I rode home and washed the bike....'coz it had pissed down the first day!
It was great to get it out of the way so quickly. Didn't seem such a pain that way.
