Hi all,

I seem to have some new bike fever (I'm sure you all know how that feels  ).

I've been riding my ZR for a couple of years now and love it. I think, though that something along the lines of the Tiger is more to my liking. Aprilla is going out of business, BMWs are too pricey and the VStrom is just, IMHO, ugly.

I spotted an '00 Tiger at a local dealership with 19k miles and looked to be very clean. It had some minor drop damage on the tank and other scuffs. The main concern was a bit of motor oil around the sidestand area.

The asking price was $5500 but the dealer (an old friend) said it would go for $5000. What do you guys think about this deal?

I came to Tigers via a VFR, then Pan (ST1100). This bike has put sheer pleasure back into my biking, yes there are a few foibles that can be easily sorted as shown by some of the trails on this forum. If you are looking for some fun biking and can roll a suitable deal give it a go, you can always move the bike on if it's not for you.

Shouldn't think that the oil by the side-stand is a problem, my 02 puts a bit down there when I forget to wipe off excess oil following lubing the chain.

With a 2000 model, you'll have the earlier engine rather than the current one. Add to that the visible drop damage, and I'm not sure that $5000 is even such a great price. (Does it include luggage or any other accessories?) Do check out the source of that oil very carefully, if you can. If it appears to be what Catuck described, all may be well and it might be an OK deal...but I would be cautious.

Thanks for the replies, guys. The oil is definitely from the motor. Even though the dealer is an old friend, he would sell swampland to his own mother.

Can't tell you about the value but you should degrease the area where the oil is and take the bike for a ride. This should allow you to see exactly where the oil is coming from. If it is the countershaft oil seal, it should be relatively easy to replace.

I would absolutely recommend you test ride the bike anyway. Under no circumstances ride a new 955i, or you will want one of those, not a 855.

Good luck

i would think $5k is over the top for a bike in the condition and age you state.

I would always be wary of buying a bike from a dealer that couldnt be bothered to put right before having it on display.

minor scratches etc I can live with but an obvious oil leak should be fixed.
