I have a 2002 Tiger 955 and I just bought it in July. It had about 2600 miles on it. I have put another 2000 on it in the last month really enjoying the bike. I went on 3 day 1000 mile ride through the mountains of North Carolina and Tenessee. I got back with a sore but. I let the bike rest about 5 days, went to start her and nothing!!!!! She would turn over but would not even sputter. I took it to the dealer and changed plugs still nothing. Then after a bunch of fuel pumped into cyclinders trying to crank, a big backfire. After taking the sidecover off and doing a leak down test it was determined that I had no compression in the bike.

It was taken apart and had significant carbon deposits all through the upper end and a good deal of carbon built up on top of the pistons. Look like it had been running rich for some time. About $700 to get here cleaned up but I want to make sure this does not happen again. I am wondering if the mapping in the fuel injectors is bad and if the software can take care of this problem.

any suggestion would be appreciated and helpful

You bought a bike two years old with only 2600 miles on it. Had it been standing around and not been driven for a long time? Your injectors might leek due to dried out gasoline. I think you should test the injectors.

The computer mapping does not know if an injector leek but you should notice how much fuel it takes. I run about 45 miles a gallon on my Tiger-05. See other trail about fuel consumption.

Sorry to hear about the motor.....not good I wonder what grade of fuel the previous owner ran it on? Do you know if the previous owner at least started it every once in a while when it was sitting idle?
Could be any number of contributory factors involved here, but we would all obviously be interested in your technicians report as to the cause..

Good luck anyway

BG 44k works! Use it! I'm a newbie here but seems like y'all have a lot of problems. I have a 2000 ST with 22K NO PROBLEMS. Just got a brand new left over 1999 Tiger last month 1500 miles NO PROBLEMS. I suggest they be riden not polished.

Jim,

I know of 40k fuel additive for diesel motors but not for petrol, maybe it's the same kind of stuff???. It keeps the injectors clean and also helps to prevent carbon build up.

It's normally put in the tank at fill up but the most effective way is to put it straight into the fuel filter when replacing with a new one.

as the label says, it's supposed to last 40k miles.

But then again maybe it is something completely different.

thanks for all the feedback. The mechanic who has been working on my bike said there was an additive that would help this problem. It just seems incredibly early for a problem like this to show up. Is there any way to check and see if a problem like this is continuing once I get the bike back together and running again. It has shaken my confidence in the bike's ability to go on long trips. If this had happened 500 miles from home I would have been in a hell of a mess.

Is the correct adjustment of the fuel injectors? controlled by the computer mapping?

Could the fuel injectors be bad or would it likely be that they just need cleaning.

I am new to this but do not want to have to be worried about doing this again 5000 miles later.

Thanks for you help :???:

Hope your bike will run fine after this!

Fuel injectors canīt be adjusted, they can be cleaned by a professional shop. However the fuel pressure are important and clean fuel. There should be a fuel pressure regulator after the fuel pump an also a filter. I donīt know their position on the bike, but i know the technique.

If you want to read about injectors look at a car discussion forum. I find if strange that motorcycles have so much problem with fuel injection when the technique works on cars since many years.

Copy from http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Engi...ctor_Diagnosis

quote
"Placing an ear close to the handle of the screwdriver should allow a faint "clicking" to be heard. This is the injector solenoid opening and closing. To obtain a better appreciation on combustion conditions within each cylinder, one may pull the plugs for observation. Dark grey/brown indicates normal "burn". Light grey/white indicates lean "burn". Black and oily usually means a rich "burn" or oil control problem. "

You can also feel the color of exhaust pipe inside the end. Should be grey to black but not a lot of carbone. You can also keep track of your fuel consumption.

Good luck!

The fuel injectors are controlled by the ecu and injection system. There are a number of sensors on the bike which report back to the ecu all the time, allowing the system to make minute adjustments all the time.

The fuel filter is situated inside the fuel tank on the lower left hand side. It sits on top of the fuel pump submerged. It should be changed every 12,000 miles.
The pressure regulator is also fitted to the plate on the same part of the tank.

My bike just had it's first 12,000 and when i looked at the valve ports the inlet manifold, it was like new in there. I know that's not a lot of help to you but the point i am trying to make, is that it shouldn't be happening to a bike that low in mileage.

I dont know if fuel quality is an issue in the U.S.? , but it certainly seems like it could be.....

Did your technician go further than just the head off?, did he check piston rings for damage as well?

I think it is fair to say that your problem is rare, and that in general the Tiger is a good reliable workhorse. Yes there will be odd problems, and human nature being what it is, we do tend to go on about the things that go wrong in proportion to the things that go right.

I and my friends have had many many miles of reliable long distance riding on our Tigers. Get this sorted out and things will be fine, but to be sure, get the filter changed and use an additive if you suspect dodgy fuel.

Good luck with everything.

I add Injection cleaner to all my bikes ( both Injection and CARB engines ), every 3 months or so and I also add it to any newly aquired bike (or car).

This seems to burn off any crap and makes it run better. In the UK we have expensive petrol with additives and this can do a similar job if the bike starts to feel sluggish etc.

It'll be fine their tough engines
