Hello, all,
I have noticed that around town my '03 gets about 36-37 mpg (US gallons). On the road it gets in the mid 40's (42-45 mpg). I'm wondering what your experiences are; is that is a normal variation? 36 seems pretty lame, even though it is in town. I don't drive a lot of stop and go. Mostly just short commutes.
Any thoughts?

Those numbers do seem a little low, Paul. I generally see mid-40s in town and 48-50 on the highway.
How many miles are on yours, and do you have bags fitted?

John,
It has about 3,000 miles. I usually drive around with the bags on, although I'm going to take them off for this tankful, just to see how much difference it makes. Hard to imagine it would make much difference in town driving. The highway mileage of 45 was had with a pretty light load onboard (some clothes, no camping gear).
Is your '01 fuel injected?

Yes, mine is a 955i also.
I find the boxes make a 2-3 mpg difference on the highway, but very little in town. The figures I gave were with them on, so I doubt that they account for your results.
You are getting about the miles per gallon one would expect of a brand new, relatively stiff, engine. At 3000 miles, however, it should be thoroughly run in, so that probably doesn't account for your mileage either.
You may be running a bit rich for some reason...perhaps a sensor feeding the engine control module is giving an erroneous reading, or the throttle bodies may need adjustment, or there may be other causes that someone here would recognize. My guess would be that it's not a serious problem in the sense of anything that's going to harm the bike, but it's definitely worth mentioning to the mechanic at the next service.

John,
I've just done another fill-up and registered about 42 mpg, mostly around town. Most of the time was with bags off. So that seems a little more normal. I'm going to run some injector cleaner in this tank and see if that makes any difference.
