Howdy folks,

I have found a 2002 tiger for sale. Less than 9000 miles, been down on one side resulting in a little rash on the sid e of the tank. Paint is still on there and I think I can wetsand alot of it out. It appears that with some TLC it could be like new again. what do I need to do check this bike out? I plan to take it to out local dealer to check it over but is there anything I can check?

Questions are:
What is different about the 2002 year model from other years? I think I read somewhere they changed the geometry of the frame, did they? What else is different?

How much and where can I find triumph luggage including
mounts? Is there better luggage? I have jesse's on my current bike but they have delayed making mounts for the Triumphs indefinately.

I'm short, 5'8", 29" inseam. with the seat in the lowest position I cna get the toes of both feet down. By dropping the forks and changing the adjuster in the back, how much lower will it be? The hogon shock, how much will it lower it?

Wind buffeting. I've been thru this on several bikes, including my current ride (F650GS). Do I have any chance of getting rid of the buffeting?? Is there a good shield out there that will give me a quiet pocket of air?

what, if any, known problems that I should look out for?

Is $4000 a good price? It will need 2 tires, normal fluid changes, possibly a clutch cable (seems to be sticking) and thats all I can determine at this point.

Thanks for any and all advice!!

An 05 with bags, 11,000mi and useable tires sold on E-Bay last week for $6000. Big 4 (the dealer in Evansville IN) was the seller.

I'd guess you'll have in excess of $5000 in that 02 by the time you buy tires and get bags fitted.

Yep. I was thinking about $4600-$5000 if I added triumph bags.
I saw that one on ebay. That is the only to sell that cheap though.
I like the 02 as it can be lowered in the rear easily.

Regarding bags, I had Jesses on my BMW 1150 ADV, but I just recently put the Happy Trails on my '02 Tiger. I liked both sets of bags a lot, but I think that I like the HT bags a little better. I ended up with the Canyon Cut models, with the wider box on the left side, and the narrower one on the right (since it had to mount outside the exhaust pipe).

The HT bags are a little daunting at first as you have to line things up where you want them, and then start drilling some holes into them! But measure twice and cut once, and things will be fine.

With the HT's on the Tiger you also have to re-mount the rear turn signals (at least the left one) to clear the bag. Best thing to do is just get some cheap short-stalk replacement turn signals, and mount them up when you have the luggage rack/tail-piece off when mounting the HT rack. I recall I also had to do this when fitting the Jesses to the ADV.

Good luck,
Tom

I checked on the mounts for Jesse luggage and they have no ETA as to when they will have more. They are working full time on BMW mounts.

The 02+ engines are a little stronger than the previous generation. I don't know that the frame geometry was changed. I'm a 31" inseam and can't get flat footed on the Tiger. I would guess you could lower the bike 1 - 1/2" at most. The windscreen issue is pretty subjective. I'm 5"10" and pretty much ok with the stock. Cee Baileys has several choices but so much of being "right" is relative to each's height. I'm guessing you'll not find many 29" inseam riders to compare notes with on the Tiger. The Sprint and Tiger bags are the same so you might have luck on ebay or salvage sites for the bags themselves. You can probably still buy new from Triumph as it is current stuff. $1000 I'd bet. Guess this isn't really much help

You aren't going to notice any drastic differences in handling from the '02 - '05; '06 has 1050 heads, shorter trail, better suspension, good overall improvement.

The '02 was a pretty good year but you might take a look at fuel connectors under tank.... the plastic has been replaced with metal.... a ***** to do!

FYI.... there is a guy on e-bay who has a ton of Triumph bags... don't know where he got them... mabe leftovers from Triumph due to the new design. Also... I would seriously look at a couple of Pelican cases. They are 1/2 the costs; Tougher bag; Watertight. Just find or build a rack system.

Lowering the bike:
Run the fork tubes about 1-1/2" up the triple tree; Rotate the rear eccentric; Shave the seat down about 1-1/2" and you will be in good shape.

Wind buffeting .... address that after you make the other mods.

I'm told that the Triumph brackets are actually teh same as the Honda ST Pan kit, I park next to a Pan every day and having had a look at them they do seeem identical.

Maybe if you can find some ST brackets you can fit them to the Tiger ?
