Am I missing the point or is the new Tiger a complete joke ??
The reason I have bought Tiger after Tiger, is that I am a big lad and I like big trailies, and the Tiger is the best of the best.
The new Tiger is a joke. It is not a trail bike at all. Now I know to some on here it might be just up their street, but can you tell me why ??
Come on lads and lasses, do we like big trailies or am I missing the point all together ??

Like you, I think the new 1050 Tiger is a bit of a sop to fashion - looks less capable of comfortable long distances 2 up than my 'old' 06MY 955i.
I rode a mate's bog standard 06MY Tiger back to back with mine (modified with Remus can, remap, upgraded suspension and gearing etc) like chalk and cheese - and both have their charms.
I'm sure we can all make our 955's faster/better handling etc if we want to, or simply upgrade the motor to Speed Triple spec - it's probably cheaper than the dismal trade in I expect we'll be quoted now we're riding 'old' machines!

Well. It's still a big Trailie. Just has a smaller front wheel. Beyond that, it's got better ergos, is much lighter and better looking, and has a the latest version of the venerable 1050 motor with thicker engine cases, better brakes, and second generation EFI. I'm sure once they are released and people start buying them we'll see plenty of happy campers posting pictures of themselves in the dirt and muck same as they have with every other Tiger.
Keep in mind, every new version of the Tiger has been met with disdain from owners of the previous version. It's just human nature to resist change. I personally think this bike can do everything the old one can do, only now normal height people can own them too.
This bike is going to sell like hot cakes and will set the standard for future bikes to come. This type of bike is going to be the new standard for those of us who don't care for the "tank humper" riding position. I'm thrilled this bike came along. It's exactly everything I've been looking for.

I am missing the point then, because as I see it, it's not a trailie. It looks nothing like a trailie.
It looks nothing like a trailie and if anyone trys to take it off road with those tyres on they are in for a big shock !!
Sorry, but in my opinion Triumph has lost the plot completely, or has gone for a totally different market.

They are going for a different market, but they are entitled to, and I think the 'funbike'-market is indeed the bigger one. Most Tiger-users never take their girlie offroad (and lose 8 spokes in the rear wheel as a result ..  )
But lets not get into this fight again. Lets not be as silly as seen on for example KTM-forums, where carburated 950-owners piss on fuel injected 990-owners, cause only carburated and preferably extremely high bikes are supposed to be 'the real thing'.
Have fun with the bike you have, or buy a new Tiger and modify it.
Or do buy a KTM, which is what I am doing.

I remember in a previous thread JRO said all bikes a are dirt bikes, depends how far you want to go ( inaccurate quote).
After seeing the ride story about the guys offroading Harleys in the 50s on the ADV forum I'd have to agree.
I like the 19" front wheel on the 955, but it wouldn't stop me taking the 1050 down a dirt road or even a gravel track. I love the styling and the whole 'Sprint with legroom' thing its got going on.
I like my 955 because its an all roads bike that I off road about 10% of the time. The 1050 will be fine, but slightly less competent.
Anyway, it's amazing how many guys have come out of the woodwork and reveal they've already put 17" wheels on their Tigers. You'd have to say Triumph's marketing people believe they'll sell more of these things.
Of more concern to me is that ridiculous stepped seat. My wife is 6' and doesn't like sitting way above me. I guess we'll just have to take a long test ride down a dirt road to see if it works for us.

I don't see the problem you either buy or you don't,i've run 17" wheels on my Tiger for years,both spoked and Dymags,so i know the plus's,the Tiger in any model has never been an off roader,just because you think it was,doesn't make it true!!!,even Triumph didn't think it was!!
Haveing seen the 1050, Blue and white in the fleash so to speak and sat on them,i think their great, but it was such a struggle for my wife to get on the pillion and then she had a clear view over my head which she didn't like so on that basis i certainly won't be buying one,but so what!!! there are plenty of other bikes out there!!.

Triumph has tacked off at an angle from the current Tiger. I think they're aiming at the CBF1000, FZ1 & multistrada market. I also think they should have picked another name for it out of the Triumph history books. It looks to be a better spec than the Jap bikes but the CBF1000 is only £6000 here in the UK, against the £7500 for the Triumph.

I don't disagree with you winger and my comment about 17 wheels was not a criticism but an acknowledgement that there is a market for a Tiger with 17" wheels.
Just as there is a following for the Tiger set up like yours (even though it's not a 'real' supermono), people off road 'em too and these people will miss the current model.
Living in the Northern Territory I do a lot of running on unsealed roads and tracks and My experience is:
1. 17" front wheels are less fun on the gravel than 19wheels"
2. Dings in My FJ's mags are a lot harder to straighten out than on Tigger's spokys
3. Sitting upright and wide bars are a lot more condusive to riding on dirt than hunched over. Had to ride my Friend's Busa 200ks over a gravel road once. "Hardy, fetch my brown trousers"
So even though as you say, Tigger is not a 'real' dirt bike, its ideal for these sorts of conditions. I think the 1050 will be ok too, wide bars, sit up possy, reasonable clearance and suspension travel. I hope the seat works out for us because I really like the way it looks and that 1050 motor is going to rock! Oh yeah, hopefully there are 17" Anakees.
