Please don’ shoot me but I have a question :???:
I’m looking for a roadster for long trips and I’m waiting to test ride the 2007 Tiger 1050. Meanwhile I’ve been trying to compare its performance with other motorbikes of the same style and I am very impressed with the BMW R1200R which sells here for a very similar price.
In what respects can the Tiger be a better choice?

In all respects, but especially engine characteristics, power, torque, speed, character, handl ing, looks, practicality, value for money............. that's the short list.Plus you won't need a pipe and slippers or a Sam Brown belt.

Isn't the Tiger something like 50 pounds lighter? I'd think that would be a plus but if I were buying right now I'd probably go with the BMW as I have an aversion to buying during the first model year of any new model / major redesign.

I would hate to be seen close to a BMW, let alone riding one :brk:
But on paper it looks very good!

And it's not just the BMW. You then have to get an Aerostitch suit in Hi-Vis yellow, a helmet that the chin flips up, a beret, grow a goatee and smoke those skinny little cigars. There's just no end to it. And then......... if you've got a K bike it's not really a BMW!

Coincidentally I was just at the BMW dealer in Reno picking up some riding armor. I had a good look at the bikes and the dealership. It seems to be a very good dealer but as it is in Sparks, it just is not convenient for me compared to Triumph which has such a great dealership in Reno.
That and the prices. Over here, sticker on the 1200 GS was over $19K. The big touring Beemer was had a sticker of something like $31K. I did not see an R1200R but I cannot imagine it being competitive in terms of value to the new Tiger. The Tiger has a half fairing and shield that the stock R1200R does not come with as well. I guess the 1200R is a bit cheaper than their other bikes but I think it is going to run you at least 20% more than the brand new Tiger.
I don't even want to ask about the service and parts costs of the Beemers.
But the bikes are impressive in terms of quality and craftwmanship. The welds and the frame on the 1200GS are just impeccable. Every bolt is quality through and through. The quality just seems a level above Triumph.
That said, the styling can be awkward on BMWs and Triumph wins in this category easily.
I would wait on the Tiger 1050 if you can hold out another four or five months or so.
Besides that, haven't the Germans rolled through your country on the way to France a couple of times in the last hundred years? I know it is one big happy family over there now but my advice is to go with the Triumph.

I wouldn't be too concerned with teething problems on the new 1050 Tiger. After all the engine is already well tested on the St and Speed Triple and is detuned so will be bulletproof. The chassis, suspension and brakes are pretty much straight off the Speed Triple,so is there much to go wromg ? I would buy one tomorrow except for a car loan of £500 per month and both kids at university (thank you the government for just increasin tuition fees). So I will stay with my 05 Tiger and then will decide what to do.Either Tiger or S3,but I would not even consider a BMw.In my view the boxer is an ancient design which is not appealing, and BMW prices are not matched by their legendary reliability - which is just that - a legend. Having said all that we are all free to spend our money on whatever bike we fancy and that's fair enough,I will stick with the Triple engine.

I'm looking forward to replacing my R1200ST with a new Tiger. As soon as a yellow one without ABS is available.
Reasons: The BMW has become boring. Likely the Tiger is more comfortable. Tiger is lighter and more powerful. Tiger triple has a great sound. Tiger likely to be more flickable in the twisties. Tiger wins on looks. Tiger is cheaper. I think the Tiger will handle dirt roads better than the BMW as well.
On the other hand, the R1200ST does everything well, gets great gas mileage (54 mpg), is smooth, reliable, and no chain maintenence. I've put 19k miles on her and burned out 5 sets of tires.
