I am considering buying a set of custom made ear plugs, the ones that are made from a mould after having boiling hot wax poured down each ear.

I know they are expensive compared to the usual foam type but do they workIs there more than one manufacturer.

Thanks

There are a number of manufacturers who produce this sort of ear protection, best place to look is on the net or go through a few of the bike mags.

I'm sure someone will come up with a few names for you here but there is one company that even produce ear phones in the ear piece for music and intercom equipment.

First of all it ain't boiling hot wax!!!!they inject slicone into your ear with a syringe!!!,i've had two set's made and my wife one, there great for work and clay shooting!! but ***** on a bike, they work loose just an absolute knats***** and let the noise in!!,hence why were both back to useing Max foam plugs.

I got some a couple of years ago, seeing as I ride every day. I used them for about a week, and went back to foam plugs. Uncomfortable compared to foam plugs, and noisier.

Tigerbob,
Best £50 I ever spent! A pair of moulded earlugs from www.ultimateear.com
Yes, then did work loose the first time I tried them - the fix is to lick them before you put them in, which ensures a perfect seal.
They aren't allowed to tell you that of course due to namby-pamby hygene regs. As far as I know, you can't catch anything from yourself!

I had custom moulded plugs made, and have gone back to foam because the moulded ones work loose. Mine have the built-in speakers (tubes from mini-speakers) for use with my iPod. I only use them on a long ride when I want music, but for day to day riding the foam plugs cut out the wind noise best. I might try to get the moulded ones done again as one side seems to stay in OK, and if the other one could be made to fit as well they'd be OK.

After having boiling hot wax poured down one's ears, plugs would seem to be unnecessary. I had some custom silicone ones but they became uncomfortable after a while, spit or no spit. I sometimes use the neon colored soft foams but when I want tunes I use a soft barbed plastic with a pair of Koss earphones attached- see Aerostitch for the particulars. Total cost around $35.

thanks for that link ,i have been buying those plugs from motrax, via j&s for £9.99 and you get 51 pairs in a bag.

these are half price even with the carrige

they are the best plugs on the market ,certainly for me,but you must role them up between your fingers and lick them or wet them before puting them in,it makes a much better fit. :-D :-D

I got the do-it-yourself kit from http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/silnatrubear.html
and had them make me plugs to fit my Koss earphones. I had them made in yellow to match the Tiger! I use them with XM Radio and find them to work real well on really long days. They are somewhat uncomfortable for the first few hours if I haven't used them for a long time, but after a bit of a break, they can't even be felt!
I give them four stripes!
