With the inevitable onset of winter, my mind is looking towards a winter project to while away the dark evenings and crappy weather.

Big strip down, major service and clean up of Stripey should keep me busy for a while ? (because i ride all year round) But apart from that hmmmmmm ?

Anybody got anything interesting planned ?

Cheers,

Well I normally run my GPz500 through the worst days of the winter, when I'm paranoid about the weight of a bigger bike on potential ice patches.

But having just done a major service on it, I noticed that the frame and swingarm have a fair amount of surface rust on them which could turn structural if it gets left for a few more salty winters.

So this winter I've decided to strip it down completely and either get the frame and swingarm powder coated, or give the rusty areas a proper going over with wire brushes and hammerite.

It'll also give me a chance to neaten up the wiring loom, replace the major bearings in the suspension linkage and sort out some gremlins with the alarm/immobiliser.

Should be quite fun really :hammer:

Just finished my winter project, took me 18 months. Suzuki GS750 purchased off ebay for £125.00 bought it home in plastic bags and boxes, biggest load of junk I ever purchased.

I looks good now, spent about £900....powder coating...wheels ..tyres...rebore...chain....seat.. etc etc

I recently met an old chap with a Honda Benly (200cc 60s bike) and it looked the dogs dooooodaaaaahs. I commented on the excellent spray job on the frame...he said it hadn't been sprayed it was Hammerite. He couldn't afford a powder coat finish so being an old body repairer he prepared the frame in the usual way and then painted it with thin coat of hammerite....left for a week..flatted the paint of with 1000 grit paper and gave it another coat of Hammer...left it for a week etc etc.

After 5 coats he ended up with a ver professional finish indeed.

I will certainly be using this method for small repair areas on my bikes in the future.

After a couple of trips away this year, my 02 will like big stripey be getting a major service and really good clean in all those little places I don't normally bother with.

Awhile ago I saw an Italian company Numero trio, have an 03 tiger but with a single sided swing arm off a Daytonna. Looked the Dogs Nuts and so may look into this a little further over winter.

Must clean the garage. I know, doesn't sound like a project for the whole winter but you've not seen my garage. Would be nice to see the work bench again. Really need that bench to rebuild the Speed Triples shock with Race Tech Gold Valve kit. Guess that qualifies as a project.
