I read some where ( it may have been here ) that you can buy a relay that turns the main beam headlight into an extra dipped beam headlight. Has anyone tried this mod out, and with what success.

There are lots of posts on here explaining the mod. Yes its dead easy and the correct relays are mentioned in the posts.
I got mine from
www.triumphtiger-online.co.uk
they do a specific pack of two relays. Careful though you will see something else on the site that you will realise you really cannot do without.
Good Luck
Chris

Hi,

As Chris as said there are plenty of threads in the posts.

The main point is you cannot just put bog standard car relays in.

The correct ones have a diode to stop battery drain when the ignition is of.

The Triumph dealers sell them as a standard accessory but from recollection they are some £12 each and you need 2.

There is usually a couple on Ebay as there is now.

There was a lot of threads on this topic when I joined, a lot of talk about 4 pin and 5 pin relays.
I bought the Triumph ones to avoid any problems with the battery draining as it's clear a 4 pin relay can not do the same job as a 5 pin relay. Yes, they are a bit more expensive but they work.
Even with both bulbs on, in both dipped and main beam, I still think the lighting needs improving.

Yes. While you're in there putting the relays in the correct holes, put in some "Ring Ultra Xenon" (or equivalent) bulbs in. They claim to be "up to 60% brighter" and in my experience are near to that. I've found that the twin beams and the new bulbs easily allows me to go 70~80mph along an unlit A or B road. If you think you need to go faster than that, you need help.

Watch out for those cheap knock-off bulbs though! The rule of thumb - if the glass of the bulb is tinted - DO NOT BUY! They are made for posers who want their cars to look like the new expensive ones w/ HID's. The truth is, the tint filters out the lower temperature spectrum and leaves the blueish white. Since the power of the bulb is the same as regular halogen, you are left with much less light due to the filtering of the tinted glass! Some compensate by jacking up the power - it'll either reduce the bulb life or put a drain on your electrical system, or both!
I bought a cheap set of EuroDezign H4 bulbs off eBay, they claim 8500K temperature light. How dumb was I?! Luckily, before I wasted my time putting them onto the bike, I did some reasearh and am now ready to give the bulbs away for free, unused. Even the $400+ real HID's don't give you anywhere near 8500K! Plus, most Eurodezign users say the bulbs last only a couple of months. Typical cheap stuff!
There are some good Xenons out there, but they cost $70+. I just ordered a set of Philips Motovision bulbs. Should be a good bang for buck stuff from what I've read.

Good luck!

If you go to your local accessory shop, and ask for a B configuration relay, it'll cost you abot £6 for the pair. Most shops sell the type A configuration, but if you fit that the relay is permanently energise even when the ignition is off.,resulting in a flat battery! Here's a post I wrote for the Sprint forum:
There are 2 empty relay holders under the seat, behind the right side body panel. The forward position enables double main beam, and the rearmost enables double dipped beams. Each slot has one permanently live terminal; this is the main feed from the fusebox to the lamps. When the ignition and headlights (main or dip) are on, another terminal goes live. The other two pins are the respective neutral(earth) terminals.

The reason I had a battery problem, is that the standard (in UK) accessory relay is a Type A pin configuration which does not match the Triumph relay slot wiring, and connects the switching terminal on the relay to the permanently live coil feed on the relay holder. This type of relay has a pin configuration of (clockwise, looking at pins) 87,85,86,30.(i.e. 87 opposite 86).

The Triumphs require a relay with pin configuration Type B. (I think that this is a standard configuration in Australia;the Narva relay recommended elsewhere is Type B). Most accessory shops in the UK stock Type A, and don't realise that there is an alternative. Of course, if you're not using an existing relay holder, it doesn't matter as you just wire it according to instructions. Type B configuration is 87,85,30,86.(i.e. 87 opposite 30). This is standard for VW, Saab, Renault, Peugeot & Rover. I used Ring relays; model RLFK30.
So, the ebay advertisers are possibly right, they are selling "special" relays, but if you ask for 2 Type B pin configuration relays, and check the pin position as (87 opposite 30), for GBP6 (£6), you can do this conversion.

Sorry if this is long winded , but hopefully it will help.

As Black Tiger says, the xenon bulbs are excellent. Try this website; they deliver promptly and you get 2 pairs of bulbs for the price of 1.Page Title Their own branded bulbs are re-boxed GE Mega White bulbs which won an Auto Express test.
