If you can afford to own a BMW then go for it. Don't listen to JRO. He was anal raped by a BMW once and has had a chip on his shoulder ever since.
The BMW is a better machine, but at twice the cost of a Tiger, you have to ask yourself if it's worth it.
To me it was. I am far more comfotable on the BMW than I was on the Tiger and I am growing to love it more every day.
The only draw back to me is that I could have had two triumphs for the same money.

Graeme,
Reading on a BMW web site one owner of a GS12 stated....
' There are two kinds of BMW1200 owners, those whose Bikes have broken down, and those whose Bikes are about to breakdown !' That was a quote from a 1200 owner.
Pay your money and take your chance. Look at the GS UK owners board and there are so many horror stories with the 1200. You simply do not find those stories on other sites I have looked at for other marques. Honda, Triumph, whatever. Also with the New Tiger round the corner I am sure you will get a good deal on the 'last'of the '06' Tigers, and look what you get for your money, Heated grips, center stand, luggage. I recently found a two month old Tiger '06' and saved another grand off list. The new Tiger will not be like the last one, (the current one !) But the '07' will certainly retail way above the list of £6999 with no goodies on as tempters. Get in quick while you can !! They ain't making anymore !
I am not anti Beemer, enjoyed an 1150GS a few years ago, but value for money only one winner !! :-D

Thanks for the advice chaps, I thought it might be a one sided affair on here !!
I posted the same question on a BMW site, wonder what the replies will be there ?
The Tiger is a great bike, but I am sick to death of chain maintenance.
I think a good long test ride on a BMW is the only way to compare them properly.
I will keep you informed.
Cheers,
Graeme.

Buy a Scottoiler! or a car......
You could pay somebody to check the chain with the 3 or 4 grand that you'd save buying a Tiger.......

Checking chains is easy. Checking final drive on a BMW is also easy: look for the shrapnel blown out on the road and the oil covering the rear wheel. Oh, and air cooling. How quaint. If I wanted quaint, I'd have one of those Bonnies. JRO boofed by a BMW? I think the whole first shift had me. The BMW owners battle cry: BOHICA! (bend over. here it comes again!).

Yes, it is true. I was suckered into buying an LT. Nothing compared to the boffing an acquaintance of mine got, however. Last year, his brand-new LT locked its rear drive on him, and put him in ICU and rehab for 4 months.
BMW (naturally), touts that their rear-drive failure issue hasn't caused any casualties. Of course, it always fails on LT's. It only occasionally happens to GS's.
In any event, my ass is still sore from the 'luxury' treatment I recieved from the Broken Motor Works. If you value your ass, keep it off a BMW.

I had my 02 Tiger leave me on the side of the road twice in 6000 miles. I have more on that on my BMW so far with no trouble at all.
All makes and models have their share of problems. No machine is perfect.
I find that the more work I do myself, the more dependable the machine is. I have yet to hear of an owner who flushes and changes his Final drive oil that has had a problem. Not saying it hasn't happened, but I have yet to hear a report.
I would be refreshing to have a manufacturer who cared more about making a reliable machine more reliable each year rather than trying to change it just to interest new people. The perfect example is the KLR650. If they made it in a full size (1000cc or so), I would be first in line to buy one.
