Pigpen, if the Ducati gets your juices flowing then you should go for it. Biking is about more than Tigers, after all.
Apart from that, the Ducati is a well made bike these days. I had one for 5 and a half years and it was the most reliable and best finished bike I'd ever owned. Yes, you will have to pay out for servicing but the air/oil coled 1000DS engine is cheaper to service than the 916 derivatives.
There is nohing quite like the feeling of riding the torque wave of a well set up Ducati through a series of sweeping bends.

Jon-
You aren't helping much help!
I am going to put this decision off until next spring because as Pineygroveshop pointed out the Northeast is a playland for the Tiger (although the Scrambler is noticeably better on non-paved surfaces so I woudn't be giving anything up along those lines) and winter is coming and I have a prediliction for riding every day possible (by my definition that means no active frozen precipiation and warmer than 5F/-10C) and I wouldn't want to expose either the Scrambler or the GT1000 to that at least this winter. The Tiger is a perfect winter machine:
1) >40,000 miles
2) Can get through anything
3) Is running great
4) Heated grips
5) It has more than a few scratches on it from the multitude of times it has been down
Note: No one should ever buy a piece of machinery I am done with :-D
Finally, I will have to see how much a valve adjustment will cost and it will give Ducati a chance to get some of the bugs out (there are reports of a hose that is internal to the fuel tank coming loose and stranding people, something my Tiger has never done).
Thanks for all the help!
Fred
