I made the mistake of stopping in at a Ducati dealer the other day and was charmed by the new GT1000. I need the five best reasons not to trade in the Tiger.

On your mark, get set, go...

1: Maintenence cost's....the bike while very attractive..( I too have drooled nearby one @ a dealer )...it will be costly.

2: Part's availability, I can only imagine how difficult it will be to get even the simplest parts.

3: Insurance cost's for the hefty 1000cc "Italian Stallion"

4: If you own a tiger, you clearly bought the bike because it fit's the purpose for which you need...a purpose which the ducati wouldnt hardly fill.

5...most importantly, it isnt a british built bike.

...After #3 I struggled abit...you convinced? :-)

Oh Fred,
Best to get an '06 Tiger while you can. You already know the capabilities. The Northeast is a playland for the beast.

Ask the dealer what a valve adjustment costs...nothing else, just valve adjustment....

Pigpen, if the Ducati gets your juices flowing then you should go for it. Biking is about more than Tigers, after all.

Apart from that, the Ducati is a well made bike these days. I had one for 5 and a half years and it was the most reliable and best finished bike I'd ever owned. Yes, you will have to pay out for servicing but the air/oil coled 1000DS engine is cheaper to service than the 916 derivatives.

There is nohing quite like the feeling of riding the torque wave of a well set up Ducati through a series of sweeping bends.

Jon-

You aren't helping much help!

I am going to put this decision off until next spring because as Pineygroveshop pointed out the Northeast is a playland for the Tiger (although the Scrambler is noticeably better on non-paved surfaces so I woudn't be giving anything up along those lines) and winter is coming and I have a prediliction for riding every day possible (by my definition that means no active frozen precipiation and warmer than 5F/-10C) and I wouldn't want to expose either the Scrambler or the GT1000 to that at least this winter. The Tiger is a perfect winter machine:

1) >40,000 miles
2) Can get through anything
3) Is running great
4) Heated grips
5) It has more than a few scratches on it from the multitude of times it has been down

Note: No one should ever buy a piece of machinery I am done with :-D

Finally, I will have to see how much a valve adjustment will cost and it will give Ducati a chance to get some of the bugs out (there are reports of a hose that is internal to the fuel tank coming loose and stranding people, something my Tiger has never done).

Thanks for all the help!

Fred

there is that:
5. The tiger topples over cheaply.

I've had to lay down my tiger twice (i.e. at a stop and the best option is to lower it to the ground). and had it knocked over by incompetent drivers parking a few times - total cost; tourtech bars + a small pot of black paint to touch them up.

I've a mate with a Duce who's paying a lot more than that for such a trivial incident.

If it's a working, day to day bike - you just can't compare...
Unless you go to work in an Armani suit, I suppose.

I sat on a grey GT1000 the other day. All the blood left my head and when I regained conscienceness there was a little drool on the gas tank. Others find it too plain next to the other Ducks but that thing has my number. Give up the Tiger? No way! Rob a bank so I can have both? Maybe. If I park it between the Tiger and the Speed Triple, maybe it would behave... How many of your own kidneys can you sell and still ride?

That was exactly my response but I am not allowed more than two bikes...

I like kyot's #5...The Tiger goes down cheaply. If you keep the luggage on all the time as I do, you don't even need the touratech bars (which I don't have).

Nor am I allowed more than two. Alas, the Morini had to go. The garage is a huge mess; maybe she wouldn't notice another... especially if it was grey.
