Went on the RAT Raid at Big Bear Lake, California this weekend...a neat enthusiastic group!

I rode home Saturday night and found the low beams good for about 35 mph on the PITCH BLACK mountain roads.

High beams were fine but as a first step different bulbs sound like the low cost trick, especially with the fairing off thing to get to the bulbs.

What are anyones experiences with replacement bulbs?...a local shop has PIAA H-4 Super White XTRA with some sort of wazoo technology that claims 100/110 watt performance from 50/55 watt draw.

PIAA also has and 80/80w H4 with 115/135 watt claims. Thoughts on these bulbs?

tigertales,

Quite a few of us here have fitted aftermarket bulbs, and we've all seen (no pun intended) a major improvement over standard. My ones are XENON EXTREME WHITE, BBLX 472 12V 60/55W H4.

Have you fitted the extra relay so both lights work together?

Be Careful with the bulb wattage. I tried some 100/110W bulbs and they damn near burnt the reflectors out!.
If the bulbs are xenon bulbs, they will probably have the 'generator' unit to fit behind the headlamps. But they are flippin' expensive....

The best i have found without shelling out loads of money, are the 'Philips Vision Plus' H4 bulbs. They are significantly brighter than stock, and the slight blue light is excellent at picking out detail in the pitch black!

Just my thoughts.....

you cant buy "proper" xenon lights to fit in standard headlights. even if you do find some claiming to be so it is a legal requirement to fit headlight washers as well!!!!!!! Now that would take some doing on a bike

I changed the standard bulbs to blue ones. I find they are more than enough as I have both headlights working and they show up much better in the daylight against standard type bulbs.

Yes they are.

According to the manufacturer of the bulbs I am using, RSE Developments, "light output is increased by the introduction of a xenon gas charge. No headlight or wiring modification is required"

Chris,

Yep, the Philips Vision plus or Blue Vision are standard fitment H4 bulbs.

then they are not proper Xenon lights. I refer to my above statement. Question though. how much did your "Xenon" bulbs cost?

Jim,
I'm interested in these Philips replacement bulbs, can you clarify the difference between "Blue Vision" and "Vision Plus" ? The Blue Vision seem to cost a little more.
Is one brighter ? is one bluer ? Are they both noticably blue?
Which would you recommend ? How much better than stock are they ?
