02 955i, wheeled it out into the freezing cold, fired it up fine then when I enegaged first it kept cutting out.
Now in the two weeks I've had it I've notice it not like being put in gear when it's cold and it tends to stall, not sure why but I've learned to let it warm up properly.
Maybe I was a bit quicker than usual this morning setting off but even trying to hold the revs up with the throttle and engage first it cut out again. Had a quick fiddle with teh sidestand switch cover and tried again and got away fine.
Votes - who thinks this is just cold starting (and is this usual ?) and who's going for the dodgy sidestand swicth ?

could you not put a multi meter across the switch terminals and determine whether it "switches" reliably by using the side stand ?......

I could if I had a multimeter.
These are symptoms I expect either to be common or symptomatic of a well known problem on a bike that's been around this long.
So it's either me being a nervous ex-Honda owner, or some other owners will say it's caused by X or it's not a problem.
I'm hoping...... :???:

My side stand switch got real sticky when it was cold. I had to wait about 20 seconds after putting up the stand before it would switch. I pulled the rubber boot (on the switch) back and sprayed it with WD-40 and pushed it a bunch of times. Did it a little more until the switch moved freely. It's been good since.

How long did you let it warm up???
I’ve just got a 02 Tiger and have noticed it does idle to well when first fired up from cold. It takes about 20 second before the fast idle kicks in. Other day when very cold kept stalling while I put my helmet on.

Hi Fife,
Mine starts on the button (even in the cold) and I haven't had a problem with the engine cutting out, except the once when I left the side stand down, Doh!
Sounds to me that Norton Charlie might have this one right. With all the muck on the roads at this time of year, the switch is probably gunked up and just needs a clean and a splosh of WD40. So the side stand switch has my vote.
Despite this, you still grinning?

It is definately the sidestand switch. I ride all year round in Maine as long as it is warmer than 15F (-10C) in a place with a lot of road muck and this is a standard problem.
Don't use WD-40!!! Get some waterproof lithium grease and do the job right. Move the rubber sleeve back and force the grease into the space. This generally lasts a whole year. WD-40 will dry everyhting out and won't last nearly as long.
Fred
P.s. (Added by edit)
After you put the grease on, work the switch manually a few times to get the grease worked in. Hope this helps.

Waterproof lithium grease won't do anything to clean the gunk out. If you don't clean the gunk out it is going to continue to stick. The grease might be a good idea but I bet it will make it stick next time it gets cold. In 4 years and 65,000 miles I cleaned mine once about 1 1/2 years ago.

Chaps,
Thanks for the helpful hints, having looked at it more closely I think you're right it's the side stand sleeve which is stopping the switch from operating correctly.
It's a bit gunged up, I'll give it a clean and a squirt and grease it inside and hopefully that'll releive me of having to poke at it half a dozen times each morning.
Cheers.
PS Yes, I'm still smiling. Though I polished my VFR yesterday in preparation for sale and it came up beautifully. I'm going to miss that Honda build quality.

That is true, I agree that cleaning it up first is required. I should have mentioned that. The grease I used was rated to -40 (doesn't matter C or F, take your pick).
