Looking at earlier threads on Anakee's versus Tourances etc... I thought I might as well ask yet another rubber related question.
I will be touring around Western Europe this summer and expect to clock around 4.5k miles, gentle miles not at full wack. The question is will the Anakee's that are fitted with 2k under there belt last the distance?
I was hoping that the rear would last until I return. I don't want to take any chances but then again I do not want to waste money buying replacement tyres when the ones I've got will complete the trip.
Lastly on the choice of replacement rubber has anybody tried Conti Escape's?

If you stick the bike in the garage and not use it again until you go away, then, your tyres might last the distance.
But somehow I think you'll either need to replace them before, or during your holiday.
Personally I like to have enough tread to make sure it lasts the trip. This usually means new tyres.
ps, welcome to the forum.

Unless were going to somewhere like Lemans or Assen, anything further then it's new tyres,i work on the basis when your a 1000 miles from home and up a gum tree!!! you'd pay 10 times the price,i could right a book over the years the number of people i've meet on the road who have tried to cut corners for the sake of a few bob and in the end has cost e'm twice as much, and a boat load of hassle.

I had a similar dilemma last summer and opted for changing the rear before setting out. As others have stated, its a small price to pay for peace of mind, especially when the whole point is to enjoy the trip, not worry about ifs and buts.
BTW, at the mileage you mention, you should only need to change the rear for your eurotour. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I think I was just being hopeful on tyre life. Never mind more money to spend. I can't complain as I have just ordered a Hepco & Becker Aluminum top-box that goes with the Ali panniers that I fitted a few weeks ago. The standard one's just aren't up to it for what I have planned.

What I do when it's border line is get new ones before I go but keep the old ones in the garage to be put back on later.
If you can fit them yourself, as I do, then it cost no more and can, as winger points out, save you heaps of hassle in foreign lands.
Also, before someone asks, tyres are not cheaper elsewhere in Europe. Even in Andorra they're no cheaper that at Watlings or somewhere with similar discounts.

BlackTiger, I have been thinking of investing in the gear to mount and balance my own tires since I go through them at a farily rapid rate. With the savings from ordering them online substantial, the only other peice is the mount/balance. What gear do you use to mount and balance yours??

Remember also that there are 2 different Tourances. One is stickier and has a shorter life, one is longer lasting (I think it is the "high speed" rated one). I got 12,000 miles from my OE HS set, and could have made them last longer. I like the grip in the wet, and on dirt roads. Cold is their only enemy. Seattle is temperate and wet, so they work well here. I am on my 2nd set. Obviously Anakees or Bridgstones would be a better road tire, but I wonder about "green laning" ability.
That being said, if you compare even the harder Tourances to the "tires" that were on my '74 Honda CB500, they are like MotoGP qualifying tires.....

1st you'll need a bead breaker. 2nd get some tyre soap. It make mounting the new tyre soooooo much easier.
For the balancing, I just use axle stands with the wheel sat on its spindle sat between the axle stands.
Get some double sided Selotape to stick the weights to the rim during the trail and error stage then, when you're happy with the balance (you'll never get it perfect) stick some duct tape over the weights to ensure they don't fall off.
One tip:- you don't need to spin the wheel at 100mph to get a STATIC balance.
