PNW Tiger Meet

Hello to all Tiger Riders!
For the past 10 years, I’ve ridden 120K on road bikes (primarily on Honda ST1300’s) and I was constantly turning around every time the pavement ended.

Well a 2011 800XC followed me home about a year ago and has nagged me continuously for all kinds of upgrades and add-ons.

But during this farklefest, I was able to put on a respectable 12k of mixed pavement, gravel and two track miles. All the non-paved riding was completely new to me (having never been off pavement on a bike before). Fumbling through some of the more technical sections on the WABDR I can see why a lighter DS is preferred. But I made it! No drops! No crashes! (I know….I wasn’t really pushing myself right?) What I like best about the XC is it’s a fantastic road bike that keeps going when the tarmac stops.

So the question to my fellow Tiger riders is where and when to meet?
The proposal is this:
• The Tiger gather at the Deshutes River Campground. It’s easy to get to, not completely rustic (running water, vault toilets, showers), gas and restaurants are close by.
• Sometime in May or June we gather for a Thursday-Sunday campout. The later we make it the less snow we’ll find in the mountains.
• There is a multitude of rides with in a 100 mile radius. Two-track, forest service and twisty paved can all be ridden nearby.

Chime in…..
Who wants to hookup?

I'm not a big camp out guy but it sounds like a good thing to do in principle. Hard for me to plan that far ahead right now but if it came together and no one minds if I just cruise in from a motel I would be interested.

Thumbs up

This sounds great to me. I have camping gear from the OBCDR I ran on my KLR650 last summer, and the Tiger will easily carry all of it. My 2006 955 is also strictly on road. I'm here in Beaverton Oregon and the ride over to the Deschutes is beautiful. I would love to do it. It looks like if we add a Steamer and an Explorer, we'll have the whole line of Tigers!

Inspector Tom - I just read your "Heated Gloves" post. I've heard that battery-powered heated apparel is not very good. I researched options last year as I started commuting 15 miles each way all winter here in Portland. WET & COLD. I ended up with Warm-n-Safe waterproof heated gloves and jacket liner. The bike has just one power cord for the gear. The gloves plug into the sleeves, and the jacket plugs into the bike.

I've ridden in miserable conditions and arrived at work completely warm and dry. Top notch stuff. The distributor is right here in Portland, and he's super to visit with. Just my .02.

thanks cjmadura. the S2 gerbing look pretty good but with retiring & the cost of moving i can't see buying a pair of $200 gloves right now. all i was really doing was seeing if anyone had info on them in case i want to get them for next winter.

Read your posting about Warm and Safe gear and commuting here in Portland. Glad to hear someone else is riding in the wet/cold and liking the heated gear. I have the 90w liner and 15w gloves that i use with my First Gear Kilimanjaro in Hi-viz. I also use the First Gear HT pants with liner as well.

Where is the distributor located? I could use a better plug-in for the jacket to battery connection.

I commute down from Vancouver, Wa to Hillsboro which is about 26 miles through some of the most awful traffic on 26 and I-5

At least my Streety makes ride in and back fun.

What sort of jacket/pants do you use? See you over at CMC

Your commute sounds familiar...I travel from Hillsboro (Tanasbourne) to downtown. I'm wearing Firstgear's Rainier TPG jacket and pants. With heated gear, I'm impervious to the wet and cold - great stuff. I usually ride my 2008 KLR650, but occasionally break out the Tiger for commuting duty when the weather is nice.

The distributer for Warm-n-safe is located in a "strip warehouse"(for lack of a better term) off of Hwy 224 south of Milwaukee. Take 224 south from Portland and exit @ Lake road. Hang a left and cross 224, making a left on SE International Drive. Turn right at and drive behind building 5565. Turn left at the end of the building and look for Warm-n-Safe on the left side 4 buildings down. You might need to ask someone exactly where the warehouse is, as It's been awhile since I was there ( a year +), but the younger guy there is really great.

I rode thru that area last summer. There is some fabulous riding in NE Oregon. I doubt if I would be up for sleeping on the ground though.
