I've had 3 Tigers never had a Scott oiler on any of e'm,the tricks just keeping the chain lubed
I used to be very firmly in the lube it manually camp. Could see no benefit to a drop every now and then etc etc. Mind you the messing about at times was a pain, HOWEVER, since using the Pro-oiler (a bit more scientific and accurate than the drip drip method) I have completely changed my tune. My chain is always cleaner, therefor less damage being done. Like you, I seldom needed to actually adjust the chain but it did wear out quicker than with the auto oiler and it was a bit of a pain to need to carry chain lube on longer trips.

You are correct in that you should have no problems provided you keep the chain properly protected. I suppose it comes to how much and how often you want to get mucky yourself. Personally I thought the scotoiler idea to be fatally flawed in that there is no real adjustment on the move and more importantly that the drip factor does not take into account actual distance gone/speed or anything else.

The difference being when you've done 500 miles in the pooring rain, wheeled your bike into the hotel garage without a back ward glance, and go to it the following morning my chain ain't rusty, chain oilers might have their plus's but their ***** when it's wet.
