Don't get me wrong, I loved my Speed Triple but I couldn't take my wife on rides with it. I also grew up riding dirt bikes and before the Triple I had a KTM RXC 620, man that was a running machine but a little rough around the edges and not so good on the street. When I used to be on the KTM I liked how anything in front of the fender was fare game to drive on.

I fell in love with the snap of the Triple and the feeling of sitting on a rocket without being in a rice rocket painful seating position. I didn't want to totally give that up.

So the Tex seemed the cross of both of those machines. I have a good seating position, a GREAT motor (man I love Triumph motors) and a lot of things in front of the fender are fare game. I even have some suspension to deal with the pavement obstacles of speed bumps, dips and pot holes. I can put the wife on the back and we can have a great time. It still moves pretty fast and I can knock down 45+ mpg. I can even ride it in colder temps. The Triple seemed to start to hit the edge of the fuel map around 35 degrees Fahrenheit and by 32 it was running somewhat funny. So far I have had the Tex down to 24 and it has been happy.

Since you asked about Adventure bikes generically, I'll answer even though mine isn't a Triumph, although I'm looking with lust at the 1200. I was living in Utah and riding my Harley, and many of my riding buddies had ADV bikes, mostly BMWs but a couple of KTMs and a Tiger or two. They were able to go off on the hundreds of miles of gravel roads that I would not attempt on the Hog, so I pulled the trigger on the Buell Ulysses. I came very close to a 955i but for reasons having nothing to do with the bike and everything to do with the Salt Lake City dealer, went a different direction. It was a great choice allowing me to greatly expand my riding, including two epic rides on the Pony Express trail. The egos are nice too.

I haven't bought an adventure bike yet, but it is coming... Need to sell my cruiser first.

I too want that "whatever is in front of the fender is fair game" bike. I am tired of only paved roads, tired of the "cruiser" ergos and ready for Adventure!

I live in Colorado. I want to see the WHOLE state, not just the 1/3 that is paved...

I'd say modern adventure bikes are the equivalent to standards of old, they just plain work everywhere. Comfortable, it can be a tourer, sporty enough for twisties and no need to be scared of a little dirt. Kind of like a UJM from years ago!

To answer the original question my Adventure riding is about 85% dirt roads, mostly easy stuff with a few more demanding sections thrown in to keep it interesting. At 59 I decided that my body could no longer handle the pounding of hardcore off road riding so I picked up a KLR to see if I liked it and the rest is more or less history.

Along the way I tried a 950 KTM ( longer term KTM'er here ) but found it too big for what I was typically riding. A 650 thumper with the right set up seems to be just about right and I see more and more long term Adventure riders gravitating to these types of bikes.

My road bike is a Scrambler mostly just because but it is a nice bike in its own right. It sees a little dirt but only at a gentle pace. At this point I may add an 800 to the mix to facilitate a big tour I'd like to do when I retire. We'll see.
