Anyone seen one of these in the flesh?

Apparently not out yet, although they're on eBay! A scam, maybe?

Anyone here use the Garmin Quest? Half the price of the TomTom I notice...

TOMTOM, were at the bike show, last week, it looked good and seemed to work well with the bluetooth earpiece for voice directions. I have a TT Go for the car and swap it between that and my work van, it is superb, so the rider should be just as good.

Interested to know when someone fits one, to get a proper verdict !

Yeah, I too saw the TomTom at the NEC and it looks neat but expensive.

As for comparisons with the Garmin models and as I understand things, the TomTom can only be programmed using the unit itself. Where as Garmin provide PC software (Mapsource) which allows you to plan your route more carefully and in much more detail. This is essential if you use GPS for touring or pleasure-riding as you can play about with detours and preferable roads much more easily. This also allows you to provide or exchange routes files with other riders. Garmin units can ofcourse also be programmed directly but I find the menu-driven formats and limited number of buttons a real pain. The only time I use this option is to find the nearest fuel station or to get out of trouble if I get lost whilst winging it.

A lot depends on what you want from GPS. I think TomTom are better if you want to use post code locations and prefer the 3D views they provide. The Bluetooth connection is a step in the right direction but if you already have Autocom its no big deal. For me, I prefer Garmin. I recently used my SP3 on a 3000+mile trip to southern Spain and back via lots of preferred (and remote) roads and it worked flawlessly. Needless to say I never once looked at a conventional map.

I decided to go for the Garmin Quest gps. I bought the motorcycle mount and was a little miffed to see I needed to buy another mount to mount the mount! But, I'm very happy with the gps itself.

If anyone's interested, Maplin are selling them at £329. Also, if you buy their catalogue for £3.99, you'll get a voucher for another £15 off So, the whole kit, including both mounts, was less than the list price.

Cheers,

Mark
