Hello everybody,
I've just swapped a 05 Speed Triple for a 06 Tiger, and I'm wondering if the rough operation of it's gearbox is going to dissipate when usage increases (now it only has 16km).
I can't remember this unaccurate gearbox in the Speed Triple, that is the reason of asking it. When shifting, it feels strange, a bit rough. I hope it will get better.
Have you experienced something similar in yours?

Having a similar problem with our 06 Tiger.
Changing up is fine, very smooth but down shifting is a very rough, worst in lower gears (third down) and it's almost impossible to get into neutral with the engine running.
Our has about 1200 miles on the clock (1900km)
Any suggestions?

The gearchange normally gets much smoother after the cooking oil is removed and some proper stuff is filled in its place.
After that I would look at clutch adjustment and chain tension.

What you tell me worries me quite a bit, as my previous Speed Triple (not the 05 one, a 02 one) had similar problems with it's gearbox which weren't solved with the usage.

I thought the Tiger had a combined gear box/engine oil arrangement.
The bike has had its first service and oil changed. Level is still fine.
Clutch is and chain both okay

With my 03 when the oil needs changing and especially prior to the first fill of synthetic after the break-in oil the gearbox was very notchy. New good quality synth oil and she shifts very cleanly.
Are you sure the clutch is properly adjusted. The free play is very small but there should be some. A tiny amount can affect shifting quality. Same with the chain. Set it to the loose end or you will have problems. The tightest setting is generally considered a bit too much.
If you are sure its not clutch adjustment or chain and it has the proper oil, I would have a word with my dealer.

Hi Topcat,
Have you talked with your dealer? Do they offer you some solution or is it a matter of luck? It seems that in Hinkley bikes aren't tested long enough to see these kind of things.
BTW, my dealer has adjusted chain tension and free play of the clutch lever, but it hasn't improved...

Just as an aside, I found using 10W40 oil to offer much smoother shifting than the 20W50 Tiger sells. 10W40 is an approved weight in the manual and I got the same synthetic oil but just a different weight.

G'Day,
My manual states that you should use 10W-40 or 15W-40 oil only. It specifically states that you should not use a 10W oil with a hot rating greater than 40, nor any oils with a cold rating of 0W or 5W.
Down here in Tasmania it seems impossible to get a 10W-40 synthetic oil, so I use Shell Advance 15W-50, and my dealer always uses Fuchs Supersyn 5W-50 automotive oil (Not bike specific).
My experience has been that my gearbox likes the 15W-50 oil much better than the 5W-50 oil :???:

Ok, I agree that the oil can influence in the gearbox some bit, but I still think that there must be something wrong. When I had the 02 S3, gearbox was horrendous with new and old oil. :hammer:
