So as the bike is run in and a 2nd hand Triumph 'offroad' can was on this site I took the plunge.I have had loud cans on 3 previous Hinckleys and to my ears there is no better sound than a triple on full song.I'm sure it must be a subliminal link to my youth when I used to listen to Slippery Sam howling down Bray Hill at the TT.Anyway after some fiddling the can fitted and I took her for a test ride. The sound is a nice growl but not enough to draw attention, the only thing I have noticed is that the sound is lost as you gather speed, more so than on my other bikes.I assume this is due to the wind noise off the screen, anyway it must sound good for the people following !
I decided to buy a new heatshield rather than have the bother of rerivetting each time I swap cans. How Triumph can justify £45 for a bit of painted metal is beyond me,and the rivet fixing should have been redesigned. My mechanic broke his rivet gun as the rivets are big enough for a Chieftain tank.He improvised with a couple of self tapping screws which are obviously easier to refit than rivets. Then again that would mean less sales of over-priced shields.Maybe this is a cunning plan.
So the bike has everything fitted that I could possibly need, apart from maybe the topbox (long distance tours with the missus was the main reason for swapping the Daytona) and maybe experimenting with screens, although this seems like potentially expensive trial and error.
The main point so far is that I am pleased with my new bike and am not missing the Daytona's speed rush too much.

I had my fill of tunnels in Swirzerland this summer. My favourite was a 3km tunnel at Interlaken. The Daytona with a carbon racecan on full song was awesome. The Tiger can is ok,it's just that the wind turbulence is more noisy than the can.I'm sure people following will benefit from the sound.

Loud cans are banned on the road and you should all be hanged.
Why advertise to everyone that you're going too fast? I refer to my bike as a "stealth missile". I can go as fast as I want and nobody complains.
Listen, I know there's a big discussion about these things but from where I live, surrounded by 30mph limits for over a mile in all directions, I can hear morons (coz that's what they are!) accelerating up through the gears until they MUST be doing 60+ in the 30 limits. This is a built up district, kids pets etc. etc.
Free country though.........or is it? Discuss.

blacktiger,
I agree with what you are saying but no one is suggesting because we have a slightly louder can it is a licence to speed, in built up areas or otherwise.
In fact IMO ALL 30mph zones should have a 20mph limit, closer to what they have in France, ie 40kph.
A louder can again IMO is safer, especially for children as they have more chance of hearing it than a stealth missile.
So ride with care and caution and have respect for other road users, including pedestrians.

yes it is illegal, just as so many of the pleasures are!
Now you say you can hear others accelerating up to at least 60 in the 30 zones. get a job as a traffic cop. I am sure they could use someone that doesnt even need to see the offender to know how fast they are going!
Now seriously, the Triumph can is officially not for road use but at normal speeds and under sedate (as in in town) riding you wont know this can is offroad use only. Its only when you let rip it lets itsself be known. So I can bimble through town/city/village/past plod/traffic plod/grumpy villager/noise pollution patrollers etc without upsetting anyone. I can also (if and when I choose) let rip and enjoy my bike more.
Thats one of the reasons I like the Triumph can over a lot of others. It is only noisy when you want it to be.
As to squids doing 60/70 or whatever in 30 limits - ban them! I have no problem with that. There are times and places to go fast (stealthily or otherwise). In Belgium they have just lowered the speeds in school areas to 30km/hr. This is seven days a week as well and I do stick to the limits here. I have kids. I know what they are capable of.
In town I have no need to blast through - how else can you eye up the talent
On the open road, then I will ride as fast as I deem sensible in the current traffic conditions. If I get caught over the legal limit I will accept and pay my fine.

John,
Don't worry too much about the Triumph can. As already stated, its a great compromise between the standard can and the " HERE COMES A PILLOCK" brand. It does sound good - if you can trust a mate, follow your own bike to set your mind at rest.
As for speed limits, its not too difficult to set your own. Sometimes 30 is way too fast, and sometimes 70 is not fast enough. Lots of factors come into play when riding, and not just a number inside a red circle.
Finally, I can recommend the Triumph topbox. Finishes off the Tiger-on-tour look. A great pillion backrest and space for two full face helmets when you stop. Perhaps a tad too sensible for someone coming from a sportsbike

I am perfectly happy with the Triumph 'offroad' can,it makes a pleasant enough sound under acceleration without being offensive and is unobtrusive on a steady throttle.I really believe that a loud can is a real safety improvement - let those deadhead car drivers know you are coming.I have enjoyed a wide variety of loud cans, the loudest being Wolf underseat carbon cans on my Speed Triple. They were offensively loud but I have to admit that full bore acceleration (not in builtup areas) would make the hairs on the back oy your neck stand up.The 'offroad' cans on my Tbird are loudish but everyone comments on how good it sounds.
As for breaking the law, whilst it can't be condoned I'm sure all bikers do it often enough when circumstances allow.
As for being sensible after a sportsbike,I have borrowed a topbox off a mate and my wife (a novice pillion) says it has transformed her biking experience as it gives so much more security.I will probably invest, particularly as I'm trying to persuade her that we should do a European tour in 2006 for our holiday. The only problem is that the topbox is blue and my Tiger is silver. This mate traded his Sprint ST for a Pan European.I have ridden this 2 wheeled car and whilst Honda are the best engineers I have to say that as a biking experience it scored none out of ten for me.Completely lacking in character or rider involvement. We have just had a beach holiday in Menorca and I was bored stiff ! Can't really complain as I went with mates on 3 biking holidays so it was a good year.

If your Tiger's silver, have you considered the Givi range of topboxes. My previous Tiger was silver and I thought it was a pretty good match. Depending which box you choose it could work out to be less than half the price of Triumph's.
