I'm in the process of replacing the stock coils. I've taken the coils off prior when I removed the carbs, but not sure if I got the wiring correct. I know each coil has a positive and negative tab. I'm assuming the red wire will go to the positive tab on all coils, and the negative wire will be the other one, I cannot remember the color, but obviously not red. I don't know if I messed up the previous time, but I noticed on one of the coils the red wire was going to the negative. The bike ran fine like this until on of the other coils melted............could this be the reason? Can anyone verify the correct wiring for the coils.

Thanks

My /98 is wired with the red wires of all three coils on the right tab as you sit on the bike.

Perhaps a little late:
My '98 Steamer... just pulled and cleand the carbs this week end ...

As stated above ... as you sit and look down, RED is RIGHT on all three coils. Other color wires:
#1 - GRN
#2 - Creme
#3 - BRN

WHile you have everything apart, using a SILVER permanent marker, identify coils and wires. I also use it to note miles/date on air filter box; Top of Carbs; SPark Plugs. All those little notes are good reminders and help look with problems. The silver marker really stands out.
